Every time I see a boar hog these days, I only see his backside. Drives me nuts. Probably the last 5 or so. You might suggest that I wait for a side shot, and I try, but then the hog heads toward brush, forcing my action. Happened again last evening, though I did put him down. Grump, grump, grump...

I was up high when I took the shot. The bullet went over about 5 doe that were between me and the hog. At the shot they all looked at each other. I suppose they were wondering what that noise was, but none ran.

I shoot hogs to exterminate them, but I also take some of the meat. I've taken the attitude that half a hog is better than none.
If I have to shoot it in the butt, then that's what happens.

It is not as easy, but ones in a while, I try to drop in a shot on the back toward the head (very acute angle) or something similar from the side if the hog isn't running quite straight away.

If you aim high on the back side and hit spine, it will anchor them right there. It will generally take out their back side from being able to move or get up. After they go down, they will generally give you a second shot to finish them off. This is what I do when that's the only shot I have. It works if you can shoot straight.

Well, it’s the rifle I bought from you, and I do pretty good with it. As for the hog, he was not totally facing away. He was quartered to the right. I put the bullet about at the top of the shoulder, as far as elevation is concerned, but more into the body, to get the vitals (or something vital). He went down, flopped around a bit, then jumped up and ran into the woods. No time for a second shot. He’s probably buzzard food, but I didn’t find him. But I didn’t work at the search that hard. Never found a drop of blood. Danged hogs are tough.

I might shoot the next couple with my 270. More horsepower can’t be bad. And, I am a Nosler BT fan and user, but from the angle I’ve been shooting, the bullet might not be getting deep enough. Rarely get an exit on a hog of any size, even with a broadside shot, so a ‘long ways’ shot just might not be the task for that bullet. I might need to consider the Partition.

I've been having the same issue lately. I went from using my .223 to using my .308 for that very reason. I figure I needed more horsepower. Then you saw the "I missed" thread after the first shot with the .308. Turns out that I did not miss. He just made it farther than I was willing to search. I may need to go home and get the 45/70. If that does not work, I don't own anything with more horsepower.

If the bullet is going all the way through the hog, more horsepower is not the answer to your problem. You obviously have plenty of horsepower for the job.

In my case, the bullet is not going all the way through the hog. It isn’t a problem on side shots, but becomes a factor on other angles. More horsepower or a deeper penetrating bullet might compensate somewhat for the less than ideal angle.

One of my ‘tennis kids’ hunts with a 300 Weatherby. He says the hogs always fall down. Now...that’s horsepower.

When deer hunting, if I can’t get a good angle on the shot, I don’t shoot. Hogs, on the other hand, always get a bullet. And I don’t remember too many running off when I was using the 270, though that could be selective memory. All that said, my grandson uses a 308, and he had one run off the other afternoon. He’s the starving college kid law student, and he was gonna eat that hog - male, female, stinking or not. He was sure upset.

I wasn’t going to eat the hog I shot yesterday, so it’s no big deal, but I did miss out on doing my victory dance and posedown over the dead hog.

More "horsepower" may get you deeper penetration and may get you a better blood trail on badly quartered shots, but your hogs are going to continue to run if you fail to do significant CNS damage with your shot, either by direct impact or indirectly with hydrostatic or hydraulic shock (neither of which are reliable stoppers). People hunt grizzly, moose, and elk with .308, animals 5-10 times as large. It is more than enough "horsepower" for a hog.

Don't get me wrong. More horsepower is great. I just think you can get the result you want by choosing your shots differently.

Therein lies the rub. I’m not getting the shots I want. As for CNS, heart, lung shots...sure. For years, it seems, I was getting the good opportunities. Lately though, not so much. No idea why, other than just bad luck. So, as for me grumping about the butt shots, I’m just grumping. But I will dust off the 270 for a while and see what happens.

Try running a line of corn from your blind straight away, I've done this with deer and it helped with getting broadside shots. may work for hogs...

I say it’s 100% bullet choice. I just don’t think the BT is designed to do what you’re asking of it. The partition is great but your accuracy will likely suffer compared to the BT. If you’re wanting to stay in the 120 class I’d go bonded, or step up to a 140g bullet.

I personally had a 120g out a .260 hit the shoulder of buck and grenade without penetration. Fortunately part of the bullet went up and clipped his spine. That was a broadside shot, and I’m sure a one in a million freak incident, but it happened.

That’s was Remington Accutip, not a BT.

I agree that the bullet is likely part of the problem when it comes to shooting a big hog. The BT is a great bullet, and I’ve used them since the old Nosler Solid Base Boattail was replaced with the BT. I’ll guess that I’ve killed around 150 deer with BTs, most of them with the 270. I’ve learned that if an exit is desired, and it is, you want a broadside shot and not a rear quartering shot. Even with the quartering shots, I can’t remember losing a deer in all those years, but I have lost a bunch of hogs. I believe that the hogs are dying, but are getting far enough away that I’m not finding them. I’ll track a deer far far longer than I will a hog, and that, in itself, might be the reason I am not finding all the wounded hogs. Also to be considered is that the BT might not be penetrating as deep on a rear quartering hog to adequately wreck the vitals of the hog. Probably a Partition would travel deeper and get the job done (maybe).

What I find interesting is that I’ve been shooting hogs for 20 years or so, and it’s only lately (last 5 or 6 hogs) that I’m having to make those rear quartering shots. It can’t be anything more than just coincidence. And, a few of those hogs did present side shots, though I didn’t have them in my sights at that moment. And maybe if I had waited a bit longer on a few of those pigs, I’d have gotten the shot I wanted, but I was worried that if I didn’t take the shot I had, I might lose the opportunity to shoot at all.

So...the point of this thread was mostly just to gripe. I don’t plan to change bullets, since I have so many of the present bullet that has worked so well for me for decades. And, I’ll still take whatever shot the hog allows, since my objective is to kill the hogs and not necessarily to collect them.

.458 SOCOM with a 540 gr. hardcast gas-check. Shoot from ANY angle you like, guaranteed through and through penetration. Over 1-1/4" long...barely any room left for powder.

I've NEVER recovered one of these. I don't know where they stop at. Probably when they hit Magma, since they're lead. wink

I try for vitals or CNS shots, but will shoot them wherever I can. I don’t consider myself a hog hunter, but someone who tries to eradicate hogs. I’ve killed hogs with CNS, broadside, quartering away, quartering to, frontal and facing away.l shots.

True, but he is 80 yrs old now and I can be a pretty motivated runner at times (Wasp Nests, Wild Hogs, Dinner Bell).

But even if/when he did catch me....we'd both be wheezing like tea kettles, so probably nothing to worry about. wink
