Went to the ranch on Tuesday / Wednesday last week to carry a couple blinds I've built since the season ended. As I was scouting for an ideal location to set up my bale blind, I noticed antlers in the grass. Here's what I found...

Someone didn't survive the rut. Too bad.

Any evidence of how he met his demise? Anyone else on the property report a lost buck?

I don't believe any of our guys killed him. I also found a doe and fawn within 75 yards of him. With all the broom weed we had this year the yotes were thick as thieves. I believe they were the cause the buck's demise, but that's pure speculation.

No sir no that I'm aware of - I haven't heard about any anthrax issues in our neck of the woods (Concho County)

I'd have to bet that he was probably wounded either on that property or adjoining property and died there. Sometimes they can go quite a ways after taking a bullet through the gut or somewhere similar.

He's a big one. Too bad you didn't see him on the hoof.

You may be correct; there's a county road which runs through a potion of our 2k acres and there's been a few instances of poaching over the years, albeit nothing like one would expect in east Texas. I don't believe it was any of our hunters - not many hunt in that area and there were no reports of a lost buck. Of course he could have also been hit on that county road and had enough strength to make it to where I found him, which was within 100 yards of said road. My money is still on the yotes. I found a doe and fawn dead nearby as well, in approximately the same state of decomposition.

I cleaned him up and scored him yesterday - ended up just shy of 130.

Removed my December buck from its burial spot and while cleaning him up decided to clean up the deadhead too.
