... yes the light is still on in the house of digital night vision.

No it isn’t as sexy as thermal

No it’s not as cheap as red or green lights on the rifle or under the feeder

But for those who have been using Digisights , X-Sights , Photons , and Wraiths you may be interested in the latest news and features of Pulsar’s latest release:

I’ll post some videos here that I’ve been working on in my spare time in between rain showers and Covid-19 restrictions ....

My initial thoughts are as follows:

Pros:

Cheaper than thermal
More useful than red/green lights
Rechargeable internal and external battery options
High recoil / Shock resistance rating and performance

Con:

The zeroing menu and adjustments can be a bit daunting - for instance if you zero at 16x magnification the adjustments are in .25 increments whereas if you zero at base 4x the values are in 1.0 units. If you zero from both magnifications then you end up with whole and fractional values with no real way to easily get back to them if you update the scope or start over.

The image clarity - in daytime it is rough - after using a Wraith I’ve become a bit spoiled by daytime color images.

The focus ring - way too tight

As I said, haven’t been able to get away at night without snorkels and fins so I’ll update on night time performance and post more videos as the days go on.

All in all not a bad product and value for the dollar.

Interesting! So the only weak link under high recoil is the lens cap flipping open?

From a pure functionality standpoint - that’s the only issue and it is easily remedied with some tape or adhesive strap (velcro).

I get why the daytime cover is there - folks have been homebrewing caps for years to increase clarity in daytime.

I hope to get the night time footage next week

Nice vids, as always. It seems like a pretty slick option for us weekend hog hunters. I wouldn't ditch my Photon RT for one, but I'd probably go this route if I was buying for the first time. I do have a "con" to add to your list. The sound of the digital zoom knob grates on my effing nerves.

I did that just for you !

Hahaha , just kidding - I hear what you’re saying and you absolutely right , those weekend hog hunters who are equipped with Wraiths and Photons and make it work shouldn’t need to upgrade.

But If you’re serious about night time range like those yote hunters who run beer can size IR lights on their rigs and want to see 500+ yards then this optic has that type of sensitivity.

I wanted to try it to see if the stock IR could manage the 500 yards as Pulsar advertises - I’m going to say that’s a No with the stock IR....

Pig Popper your videos are great, thanks for taking the time to do them, I really like the high recoil tests since so many people ask about that. I've sent that Wraith video to a lot of people. I've been using the Digex N450 for several weeks as well and I really like it. I can tell you that the stock IR will not do 500 yards unless you have a bright moon and in that case, you can actually see without the IR as you mentioned above. I can see 500 yards across my pasture off my back porch and on black night and I can't see to the back of the field.

Keep up the good work.

It appeared that your stock IR light hotspot was left and low as opposed to illuminating the target at range. But still usable. I have the ATN 3-14x 4K Pro so I’m really interested in seeing if this is a viable alternative since their product QC is hit or miss.

So here is the deal with the provided stock Illuminator

It doesn’t have a focus ability - you can only direct the beam.

Typically you can focus the beam down to a square and center that and then back it out.

It’s very difficult to fine tune this IR light

Would you buy a Digex for 900 new or a Wraith for 500 new if you were first time buyer in the market?

I suppose if I was a new customers to nightvision and I had $ 900 to spend I’d choose the pulsar.

If I were only to have 500 in hand I don’t guess I’d save up to buy the Digex as there are a slew of products (wraiths and photons and older digisight models) that would make a hunt in the dark possible.

I guess what I’m saying is at the entry level I don’t think people really quibble about $400 difference in digital technology not as much as say thermal optics or high end vs entry level traditional scopes.

Your statement about the zeroing being in different units depending on the power setting...ok that all sounds weird. If you zero at 4x will you not be on target and zeroed at any power setting? Based on all of that I take it they didn't go the route of like the Wraith where you can zero with 1 shot by using an adjustment reticle to adjust POI to POA. Seems they went a complicated route for a digital scope.

Hey Earl,

Most of the digital scopes use a one-shot zero (adjust to point of impact) feature

The Digex is just as easy to zero as the Wraith - shouldn’t take anybody more than 3 shots if the gun and optics mounts are solid.

The confusing part of the Digex that I speak to is how the scope relates your X/Y settings and how you input zeros into the scope- yes that is complicated and confusing .

I suppose if a guy/gal just wanted to use the Digex on one gun and one load they wouldn’t have too much complication - if you start using profiles and variations of loads and distances - get yer PhD on!

Do it, Earl. These were taken with a Wraith a couple of weekends ago.

Just received my Digex in mail. Initial review the last May’s is really good and the IR will do everything you want it to do to at least 200 yards. Pigs are in trouble! Will update when able about ease of sight in and first hunt review.
