Anyone ever plant this stuff? I've got some small tanks on the deer lease that I'd like to throw some sort of seed out this summer for some duck groceries this winter. I was thinking smart weed. These are like half acre to an acre tanks that I can not control water levels and dont have any equipment to plant. This is just going to be a hand broadcast deal or a small spreader can be used.

Any recommendations on what I should plant? North texas area

You can plant a mix of Japanese Millet, Browntop Millet, and Wheat. Easy to just walk around with a hand held spreader, you should plant multiple times spaced out since the water level will rise and fall and you won't know exactly where it will be in the season.

Agree, smartweed can be difficult to grow if you either can’t control water, or don’t have a steady water level.

I have had best luck planting rice. I put it out in June....I have tried smartweed but it died in August and September when lakes went down...

Smartweed is easy but it's like sunflowers. Has to be in the ground a long time. The others mentioned are easy but cows love it. Smartweed comes back each year too.

This. Smartweed is a done deal once you get it established. If you have any cows, millet will be a waste of time. Been down that road more than once. I think someone mentioned rice, that’s another easy option that will establish in shallow, standing water

I would do a round in the middle of August, another Sept. 1, another Sept. 15th and another Oct. 1st. I know it seems excessive, and you will lose some of what you plant to either not enough water or too much water, but if you stagger it out and do multiple plantings you increase the chances of getting a good stand when you'll want it. That millet really takes off on a mud flat, butd if it doesn't stay pretty wet it'll dry up quickly.

I messed up the first time around and planted all my seed at once. It looked perfect for about a month then no rain, waterline receded, and it all died right before the season started.

Keep the cows off your duck hole.

Take a look at Tuner Seed and River Refuge Seed. They both have a waterfowl mix that should work well for what you are doing. Also we've had more luck with barnyard, a type of millet. So look into that as well. Like someone said above, smart weed takes a year to get going. It needs a few freezes on the seed.

Good luck.

I buy from Turner. Their mix has some smartweed in it. Smartweed needs to go in now and the rest in the fall. Staggered out like mentioned above.

This thread got me thinking I need to get my seed ordered. MBS Seed Company in Denton sells everything you need.

https://mbsseed.com/

Russel Feed is a dealer for them and they can order you whatever they don't have in stock and you won't have to pay hundreds in shipping.
