Even with my crappy soil, the wheat is coming in pretty could the year. Since I have planted wheat for quite a few years, is it best to lay off a year or rotate with another crop (Stephens “no rain” county)?

Are you talking next fall or now?

One question could be asked why are your souls so poor?

There’s things to do to help soil quality, not involving artificial fertilizers

Only thing you could rotate with is a legume like Alfalfa that’s going to put some nitrogen back in the soil.

I have been planting fall wheat and spring dove crops for the past 8 years. Spring sunflower/millet/milo plots usually burns up in June, so I am thinking of not planting anything this year. Soil is mostly sand and rock, which is why I think it’s poor.

When would one plant legume?

Thanks!

I would put wheat in again next Fall, but about 1/2 your regular seeding rate and add a healthy dose of white/ladino clover seed. The clover should come on strong in the spring and last until mid summer. Good for your soil and good for your pregnant does.

Cow peas aka black eyes. Old timers planted them and turned them under for "green manure". Critters will likely eat them before fully mature?? Peas are summer crops so plant soon.

This is what the folks at Turner seed said too. Rain last two days made it pop right up.

One way to help enrich soils that are poor is to plant legumes mixed with turnips or rape. Then just let it grow and leave it until it’s dead. The legumes will give nitrogen to the soil as BOBO said and the turnip/rape will add organic matter to the soil as the “fruits” (really the root) decompose in the soil.

If you can, a no till method or a throw and now type method will help the soil stay intact and allow the microorganisms in there to actually work to your benefit. Buckwheat can be good as it has dense root structure that will add to
The organic matter of the soil too.
