My Honda Pioneer weighs roughly 1200 lbs. Will a pair of quality 2x12’s bear the weight sufficiently for loading?

There are a lot of factores to consider. Type of wood, length of ramp, loading in truck or trailer. A full 2" thick oak plank would be the best IMO.

Which ever route you go with the information given, make sure the ramps are securely attached to what your Pioneer is being loaded into. I have seen where this wasn't done and during the loading process the back wheels spun the loading ramps/boards away from trailer/pickup bed and the four wheeler/UTV came crashing down and almost flipping over.

I don’t disagree. However, a full 2” Oak plank (i have 2) weighs more than I care to muster if I had to move them anywhere away from the trailer.

I have aluminum ramps and really like how light they are. I've wrestled with wood and steel and both were very heavy and PIA to deal with.

I stopped using 2x12's when I almost dumped one....went to Harbor Freight and bought a cheap tri-fold aluminum ramp with chains that attach to the tiedowns in the corner of the bed and never looked back.

Safer, lighter, and all around easier to handle.... 2cents

I’ve got a set of 2x12 ramps that work well. Get these kits at HD.

They also have rubber skids for the other end and traction plates for the surface. They ramp ends have protruding pine so they won’t slip. I used southern yellow pine.

Got these. Made several 800 Mille round trips with them. I always look for a little depression for loading but have loaded from my driveway. I use them as a tailgate on the road. You can't see it but I have a 3/4 inch plywood pannel in the bed of the truck. Don't use them anymore except when taking my mower to the man.

Im mostly just curious. Ive never needed a ramp so ive never put any thought into this but I may need one in the near future. Im sure you could split hairs on the specific factory designed light weight ramp but it seems a no brainer as opposed to anything wood. Besides a difference in price over wood, is there something else im missing in comparing the two options??

Wood ramps are heavy and they don't provide good traction. Plus, you don't know if there is a weak spot, knot, etc. that would cause them to snap. You're better off with a material that is rated by load weight. Just my opinion.

I have these and have a Honda pioneer. These are pricey but are light weight, strong and easy to store and handle.

When your tires are wet, they will spin and slip on a wood 2x12.
Treated lumber is slippery as anything you ever encountered.

I have a set of folding aluminum ramps with arch that are rated at 1500 pounds and use them to load ATVs, UTVs, lawn mowers, motorcycles, etc.
They came with a set of motorcycle tiedown straps to secure them to truck.
As you drive up ramps, back of truck compresses and pushes bottom of ramps back on ground.
As you get on truck it raises up and ramps can fall off of tailgate if they are not tied or strapped.

I use 36-42" 2x12....what everyone is saying above about not being ideal is correct. I have to really watch getting them wet or you will slide. First time I pulled out my back was my Ranger had slid on the ramps and was against the side rail on the trailer. We rocked it back and forth to get it off so I could remove the Ranger from the trailer....next morning I couldn't hardly get out of bed.

I'm still using them but they aren't what I would do again....I did screw an L bracket on the end of them and put some handles in the side of them. Still, I'd find some light ones and use those.

I use them because I hate a gate and the ramps that BigTex offered were not worth what they were asking and were heavy enough I've thrown my back out lugging them around. I keep telling myself I'm going to sell my Ranger but I have yet to pull the trigger on that but if I do keep it all I think a tilt aluminum trailer is the way to go. Good luck!

Watching people loading ATVs with wooden planks is akin to watching people at the boat ramp. You don't know when something is going to happen, but it will happen.

Lots of injurious occurring during loading and unloading. To this day, I still don't understand how Mr. Airs didn't break his neck falling off the 2X's when loading his ATV at the camp house in the Fox pasture.

I just have to ask. Is your life worth saving $149 or so. I have two friends killed in front to back rollovers. Spend the money. One was a 4 wheeler. The other a quad. The guys in the video were damn lucky and then to hear people laughing in the background. Unbelievable.

Man, I've seen a few of those video examples demonstrated first hand.

I witnessed Nephews BIL try to load his Honda 450 rancher in the back of his 6 week old Chevy Silverado.
His previous truck was a small low Mazda and he had short aluminum ramps for it so traction was good.
The new Chevy was about a foot taller and the ramps were at about a 45 degree angle.

He made it almost to the top before it started to stall so he gassed it and put both front wheels thru the sliding back glass on the truck.
It bent the body enough around the window frame that it had to go to body shop for repairs before another glass could be installed.
Luckily, he went over handlebars in slow motion, rolled off hood and landed on his feet.

The Honda was unscathed and that adventure gets shared around the campfire during every family campout!

I understand completely, Vern. My 450 Rancher climbed right up the back of my Tacoma and threw me flat on my back in the bed. Good thing I was younger then. One day neighbors kid bought new 4 wheeler. I’m sitting there looking out window, watching him race around and then fly up his ramps on a full size Dodge Ram. At the risk of getting told it’s none of my business, I went over and explained to him the three phases of using a 4 wheeler and the danger levels involved. 1) New 4 wheeler owner - fairly safe because you are scared of it and respect it. 2) this is the most dangerous phase. You think you know how to ride it but you don’t. This the phase where most riders get killed or injured. It’s also the phase the kid was in. 3) you actually survived phase 2 by the grace of God and now actually do know how to ride it safely and after a few close calls in Phase 2 you have survived and now respect it. Phase 2 was when I stood mine on end in the back of my truck. Bought an F150 FX4 after the Tacoma and had to relearn load/unload all over again.

Isn’t a 4 wheeler a quad? They both have 4 wheels confused2

Not sure. What I referred to was one with two side by side seats. I was really surprised when that one rolled over backwards and caused a fatality. I do believe alcohol was a factor in that one. The fatality was the rider not the driver.
