Pictured is my Savage 99 project. Rifle pictured was built in 1949 (.300 Savage). Redfield bridge scope mount, Leopold rings, Weaver K4-1. Safety is located on the lever!
Laser bore sighting is complete. Currently installing sling hardware.
With 150 grain bullet it will not quite match .308 Winchester ballistics, but longest shot I will attempt is 143 yards so I should be O.K.

Purty rifle, but why is it a project? Was it in rough shape, and you had to fix it up?

Uncle, It had a bad drill and tap job for the scope mount hardware, the bore needed some TLC, the sling hardware was missing, trying to find 1950's hardware, sling and scope was not easy...so Yes, it is a project.

Well, the almost finished job looks really nice. I've always liked the savage 99. Maybe I'll find my own project one day. Be sure and let us know how it shoots!

Finished the restoration, first target at 100 yards. Trying to decide if I will reload or use factory ammo. Currently using Hornaday Superperformance 150 gr.

I have one In .250 savage, and so I just assumed yours was too, and was really trying to figure out you got a 150g bullet.

I believe this is the rifle I shot my first deer with. It was my cousin's rifle and was a .243. Great looking rifle.

decent 300's are fairly easy to find, even factory drilled & tapped, which is always best, for shooters ect, things added like recoil pads, sling swivels non factory d&t,, if factory original in collector condition, is what I look for. recently picked up one in .358win.

Very nice looking rifle DH3! I have a 1938 rifle that was drilled and tapped back in the fifties with a Weaver K3 added.

I reload for my rifle. I've owned several bolt action rifles chambered in 300 Savage but never bought factory ammo. As far as I know, there has only been one bullet specifically designed for the 300 Savage with the consideration of its shorter magazine length (2.56"); that is the Speer 150-grain RN #2017. The bullet also considers the short case neck, when seated at the 2.56" COAL, the base of the bullet does not extend into the interior of the case beyond the bottom of the neck. I use Varget with the bullet and see 2515 FPS. It sounds like your hunting distances are similar to mine, 140-yards is a long shot in my brush country, but I shoot the rifle out to 300-yards on my range regularly. I took it mule deer hunting this year, ready to shoot that far, but I didn't see a buck that I thought interesting.

RD: FYI Hornady makes a 150gr SST designed for the 300 Savage. Very accurate in my 99:
