Love the scope, but ran into a new problem this evening. I decided to sit in the stand and wait on the hogs till I could no longer see. I picked the wrong blind today. It was pretty darn dark when the hogs showed. A bunch of big and little ones, but at 300 yards. Would have been 100 yards from the other stand. No problem. Dial the CDS to 300 turn on the firedot and let fly. But...way too dark to see the dial. Shoulda seen that problem coming. Got the little flashlight to dial and killed my night vision. Took the shot. I’ll go look in the morning.i guess I’ll have to memorize the number of clicks to distances.

As for how I attracted the hogs, I prepared for the grandson’s visit by dumping mucho corn daily in the field out from a high traffic fence crossing, then sprinkling it with Hog Wild. It seems to have worked.

Does the CDS have etched markings you can feel or is it simply a print? If it has etching enough you can experiment with glow in the dark paint. Unfortunately that’s another draw back of CDS I never thought about, I’d say it’s best to know your dope.

It’s a good problem to have when you can take a shot at 300 because of great glass and it too dark to see your turret.

That is good glass. The Vortex Viper PST is murky in comparison. And that’s not just me talking. The grandson mentioned it this afternoon. That said, I still like the Vortex and get along fine with it, realizing that it isn’t super glass.

I don’t think I can do much with the turret etching, other than memorize how many clicks to various distances, which shouldn’t be too tough. I won’t be shooting out past 300 or so, so it isn’t like I’ll have to dial to 600 in the dark. I might just dial it to 200 yards while I can still see to dial, then it won’t be a lot of clicks up to 250 or 300.

Might want to just swap rings. The Iota scope rings have a fix built-in....we use it to dial at night for long shots on coyote occasionally.

hmmm.... Why didn't you close you shooting eye before turning on a light to dial your scope? I see it has more learning experience rather than a problem with the scope.

This is one of a thousand reasons my headlamps will shine red as well as white.

Can't see in the dark? Turn on a light.

Well, ya learn by doing. I’m learning.

I don’t have a small red light, but need to get one for that ‘use in the dark’ problem I just discovered. Still, if I had gone to the best stand in the first place, this would never have been a learning moment.

This is what I would do. Cut some little glowy turret markers and your problems are over.

I might try that tape. Already ordered the small red light.

Why not keep it simple in a situation like that. Know or keep a chart of the trajectory of the round you are shooting. If my gun is dead on @ 100 yds it will be xx drop at 200 and say 8 inches at 300. Hold approximately 8 inches over and shoot.

Tcr2, that’s a reasonable suggestion, and it’s what I did for many years. I’m trying something else these days, which has been working great - using ffp scopes and this CDS scope. I get a bit more precision in bullet placement now. I just hadn’t anticipated a long shot in the dark. I ordered the glow in the dark tape and the red light someone mentioned. We’ll see how all this works. And the problem may never arise again. In 15 years of hunting this place, I had never had this problem. And if it wasn’t for the firedot reticle, I’d never have tried the shot anyway.

It appears that I missed. I hunted the right blind this afternoon and watched the deer eat my corn. Pigs never showed.

^^^^ this

Also, as a recommendation....best headlamp I've ever bought, Streamlight Bandit white/red. Rechargeable and bright, one of my better purchases. I use it WAY more than I thought I ever would.

Found the dead hog this morning. Also put the glow in the dark tape on the turret, and I got a small red flashlight. I think the tape should work if it’ll stay stuck to the turret.

So you dialed it, and hit him at 300 yards in bad light.

Does that give you confidence that in good light, you could have dialed and put him on the ground right there? It would me.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I mentioned that I had put the glow in the dark tape on the turret. It works, but needed perfecting. I took the tape off and installed small diamond shaped pieces at 200, 250, and 300 yard spots on the turret and put a larger diamond shaped bit in the scope tube. Now I can adjust with some degree of precision. Glows great too. Now what to do with the rest of the roll?

The diamond points will match up like below.

Smart. Sounds like you have more scopes to fix up.

That's real close to what I had in mind when I mentioned the tape. Only instead of a diamond shape, in my mind I had a triangle with the point down. I've been busted by hogs just from the glow of my IR light, so a red headlamp is out of the question where I hunt. Gotta get creative. cheers

Actually they are triangle shaped, not diamond shaped. That was a good suggestion, to use the tape.
