It seems to me that a lot of truck drivers don’t even need a truck. 4WD or 2WD. They never use them as trucks.

I just used my 2017 F250 4x4 to pull my 1976 F250 4x4 out of my pasture.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I’m not a gear head but I’ve always been interested in off-road vehicles and their performance since I was in Jr.High.
I 100% shop for trucks based on options and know the gear ratio, rear end types, HP & Torque specs of every vehicle I buy
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have a 4x4 with locking rear diff. I’ve had to use the locker a few times to get out of serious jams and the four wheel drive far more frequently doing normal things, as people have mentioned above. I’ve done a very small amount off roading, knowing the truck is far more capable than I am driving off road. Am I doing these things weekly? No, but I do them enough to need a 4x4, and also like being prepared.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

I made it by the first several years of my driving life with a 2wd. I got stuck...… a few dozen times. I eventually learned caution. After that it really cut down on how much I got stuck. We own property in sand country rain or dry you can get just as stuck just as quick. Since then have always bought 4x4's. I use it occasionally but not all the time, probably once a month to once every other month. Sometimes I will go weeks without doing something I need more than a car for and sometimes I use the truck like a truck. Fortunately for me my truck gets the same mileage as a lot of peoples cars. Its not fancy and it doesn't have a lift, but it does what I need and that's why I bought it. Ram 1500 3.55 gears 4x4 limited slip in the rear. And even right after her 2 year overdue bath she ain’t askeered to get dirty or scratched. Oh and see that poulan? Started right up and cut like a champ lol

So is the extra shifter thing in the floor board in my truck is how you turn on the 4 wheel drive? When I am driving and I try to move the floor shifter it makes a loud grinding like sound. I can't tell if it is 4 wheel or 2.

I launched my tin boat on a pond last Saturday, it's a 15' and I had to back down a pretty steep incline and then the back wheels were in the water / mud.
The 5.7 I force and 4WD pulled that sucker out without a slip when I got ready to go home.
I'll never have a truck without it.

Again: The difference between AWD and 4WD ? Typically if a vehicle has AWD it is active all the time, like a Nissan GT-R, and the car automatically adjusts as each axle spins....4WD is active only when engaged. It's just semantics.

Depending on the AWD maker most the time it’s 2x4 then if a rear tire slips the front kicks in.
Think of it as a limited slip auto engage.

The main difference in 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive is how far the tow truck has to go to pull you out if you don't use some common sense. Doesn't matter what you have in the 4 wheel setup the farther you are in the muck the higher the bill will be. Don't ask me how I know.

I use my 4wd quite often...but very little in mud, as it doesn’t rain much here in central and south Texas

My current truck is the first 4x4 i've owned. When i met my wife, her family has some really sandy country. I burried my old 2wd truck in that sugar sand one too many times. She said i had to put a ring on her finger before i could get a truck. She got the ring, i got a truck. I guess i'm a little bit of a gear head, but only when it comes to the cummins platform. I havent really kept up with the others over the years, but could tell you anything and everything about the different year models from 1991 up to the 2013s. I quit keeping up when they went to the def fluid.

You can’t look at most of the guys driving one and/or the truck and you know if it gets used or it’s a pavement princess. Both my 2wd’s have seen more mud, sand, rock, and water than 50% of 4x4s that are daily driven.

I've had my Titan 4WD for a couple years, NEVER been out of 2 wheel drive. I'm guilty of owning a shiny, black, 4WD truck. Its huge. Off road to me is my garage. I'm going to sell it and get a SUV, maybe a Telluride, Lexus 350. The Titan long-bed is like driving a battleship. I just don't need it anymore, 400HP , it scoots pretty dang good, I do love its power only has 18,656 miles on it !!!!!!!!
