Good, he needed a little more salt rubbed in his wounds for what he did.

Im not sure I understand the emphasis on the 1/2 inch? It says it was a 1/2 inch longer than the min, so that would be about all he did that was according to the law no?

I agree throw the book at him though.

Had it been 24" it would have been a $400 fine and a misdemeanor. 24"+ they consider "Trophy" and is a felony and $8k fine.

Yep. Never mind your actions. We’ll focus on the size of the antlers to determine your fate. Had he done the same thing with a smaller deer, then his actions wouldn’t have been so bad. Makes sense.

I agree, this law is pretty stupid. The criminal offense should be no different whether you shoot a doe or a monster buck.

EDIT: I still think it's funny that he got slammed for the extra 1/2". laugh

I can understand enhanced penalties for trophy animals....especially since these are the mature animals most legal hunters would target. The poachers are targeting them at night or out of season or in closed areas. What I don't understand is the lower penalties for non-trophy animals....

Those penalties should be closer to the trophy animals.... 2cents

I would understand it more if the restitution amount was higher for trophy animals, but the crime itself was the same for killing any deer..

This^^^and the restitution fees for non-trophy animals were higher...$400 vs. $8k is too great a gap....I could see min. $2k or $3k restitution then go up from there as the quality/size of the animal gets larger...

Most TPWD offences are Class-3 misdemeanors….which I can understand for simple infractions or common mistakes....but poaching as not a minor mistake.... 2cents

I would rather see the guy hit with the possibly excessive amount of $8000 and a felony than the way too small $400 fine. Might make him think next time!
