If you could use the same caliber for deer and hogs which would it be? I own a 270 and a 30-30 but would like to purchase a semi-auto rifle for both. Thanks in advance for any help.

Why don't we have time to do things right the first time, but always have time to do things over, and over, and over?

'Assuming 30-30 is a lever, I'd just stay with that. I was surprised at myself at how quick I could work the old lever on Dad's 336 shooting pigs; it's like second nature. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Depends on your budget, but for me I'd find a lightweight AR-10 .308 and go to work.

6.8 spc if going to a semi-auto Ar style will do both very well.

If it had to be a simi auto I would probably pick a 308 Winchester in a Remington 742,7400, Model 4 or a Browning BAR.

Of those two, I’d pick the 30-30. Greater mag capacity and a little quicker follow up shots. As far as a semi-auto, the 6.8 spc or the 6.5 Grendel would be fine choices and would allow you to stay with the AR-15 platform vs the AR-10. If looking at a more “traditional” rifle, check out the Browning BAR or the Remington Woodsmaster.

It’s hard to argue with a 6.8 spc for your intended use.

Depends on whether or not you want a traditional style rifle or an ar platform.

That's only true if it's a Tikka.

Otherwise, just about any bolt-action .270 should do.

30-30 doesn't have the distance capability.

Man, you had to ask didn't you. Go to Cabelas or Academy. Stand in front of the centerfire ammo section, blindfold yourself, and throw a dart. Almost anything that you hit will suffice.

AR-10 in .308.

If you really want to keep this thread going, tell us your budget and maximum range you want to kill at.

Did you read the book “A Random Walk Down the Ammo Isle”?

If it's a semi auto you looking for you must be intending to take multiple shots in rapid succession so caliber really shouldn't matter. Just keep shooting.

I did not. Truth be told, I may have had a few cervesas last night, and that may have been the last thing I posted last night. confused2 LOL. A more appropriate response would have been "For short range work, any of the common ar15 calibers in 6.5,6.8, or 30 will work. For Longer range, you might want to step up to an AR10 in just about any caliber that is chambered in it."
