Just bought one with the help of THF forums members. Ok. Need some ideas on the ammo that works best for you on this particular gun. Also would like to change the sights for something quick and rugged. Still keep open sights, but a little faster on the draw.
Hornady leverevolution is what i've got so far. Thanks

I won't weigh in on ammo choices; you'll have a blast finding what you (and the rifle) like.

As to sighting options, things have never been better for saddleguns. I've got and use both Skinner and XS on various lever guns; pick out something that seems to fit your needs and give 'em a try!

Williams sights, corlokt or interlok 150 grain bullets. Though i would also strongly consider a 1-4 scope, Still small and doesn't look out of place on a marlin, fast as irons, MUCH better in low light. I used to love irons and still use them on a few rifles, but a good low power scope is hard to beat. And if you keep the irons and do decide to get a scope too, for the love of God don't put see through mounts on that gun!!!!!!!

I''ll second the Skinner Sights, also look at Ranger Point Precision - they are down in the Houston area, nice folks and they have a lot of accessories for the Marlins.

I had a 2x7x32 on mine and it was about perfect for that rig

Have 2 Marlins 336w in 30-30. One has a Leopold 2x7 and the other a Redfield Widefield 4x. They both grouped better with 170 gr ammo. YMMV

Mine shoots very well with plain old silver box winchester "power points" 170 grains and the plain old semi buckhorn sights it came with.

I zeroed at 25, checked at 50, then re zeroed at 100 yards. Just a couple of taps to the right and like a single notch down IIRC and it was dead on at 100 And the semi buckhorn style is pretty quick on target after you learn to use them.

I love these guns, I think the 336 is the most under-rated rifle these days.

I don't have a 30-30, so I can't speak about the ammo, but I have a skinner peep on two of my levers. There is some sort of voodoo that happens when you force your eye to look through this little peep hole. It seems even old eyes focus better.

I had the best luck in my 336 with the leverevolution, far better than the next. If i remember correctly the cheapest 150gr 30-30 from federal, winchester and core-lokt all worked about as well but none seemed to better than consistently 2.0"-ish at 100yards. Mostly done with a cheap 2-7x scope.

Apparently there is some called micro groove rifling that Marlin did and some people were have issues specifically with the leverevolution in their 336s.

So does mine, better than 170 grain CoreLokt and Leverevolution.

On a side note it looks like the 336W has been discontinued which is sad.
