Unless you have sold, you haven't lost any money.

Exactly. And even some losses can work to your advantage tax-wise.

Not a dime. I’m not currently in the stock market, sold everything awhile back.

Mine is safe and sound because it's no longer in the market. I had a feeling it was about to wither and apparently I was right.

Why did the oil and gas take such a hit? Here we are with vacation time about to begin and more fuel sold . Looks like buy time to me.

It depends on how you view things.......if you were out last year you were wrong.........being right for a few days or weeks means nothing for the long term.......you no longer have risk of fluctuation of value, you now have inflation risk.......

Depending on how much the market drops in this “not a bubble”, an annual 2% inflation beats the heck out of a market drop of 10% or whatever it drops to.
Just like in Vegas, taking profits/risk off the table is winning.

Annual inflation of 2%? That would be nice if it were a true measure of inflation....not. I'm fine with taking profits if the companies I own no longer look profitable for the long term.........but not because the world is now ending.......

You don’t have to be a doom and gloomer to figure out that supply interruptions, quarantines and business shut downs will impact companies sales and revenues which is exactly why we are seeing a broad based sell off.
Individuals retirement needs and timeline should be the bases for a sound retirement plan and the risk they should be taking. Older folks may not have time for a recovery from a serious sell down.

That’s one way to look at it but then again you have not made anything either.

I've never seen inflation go up 6% in two days. That is the percentage the market has dropped the last two days.

I know there are a lot of young investors freaking out right now who have watched too many endemic apocalyptic movies and who have never lived through a real market crash. But consider the market is still around 1000 points over what it was in October. It is not even considered a "correction" yet. This virus is worse than the SARs coronavirus was and will last longer, but the pattern is the same. In a few months things will start getting back to normal. The market will recover and go up again. The virus will likely start slowing down soon due to warmer weather.

This is me in training during Ebola. I promise you the system will be ready and probably overkill if the virus takes hold in the US. But but every person who get's a cold or flu is going to start freaking out now. Glad I'm retired.
