In the market to buy one. What I am looking for is a rifle that takes a beating and keeps on ticking . Mine is going to stay in my side X side. It's going to get banged around quite a bit . Any recommendations?

Rossi trapper in 357 mag or 44 mag.

You can find Marlin 30-30 rifles used for a good price at times, I have seen some of those abused and still shoot

Another one of the posters had an issue with dirt dobbers building a nest in his barrel. I would suggest covering the end of the barrel if your going to leave it in the sxs.

I have a Winchester 94 30-30 that fits the bill. You can find 94s for all price levels on gunbroker.

I have a Henry, Marlin, and Winchester, all being 30-30's. Henry has outstanding customer service but the finish on the barrel of mine is rougher than most. It looks as if it should have spent more time on the sander. It also seems the heavier of the three. The Marlin has the smoothest action but has some trigger creep. Many have recommended the Wild West Trigger to improve Marlins. The Winchester Model 94 has the best feel by far, but I wouldn't recommend a new one unless you want to pay about twice what you can pay for a new Marlin.

I’ve got two of the Win 94’s and really like them. The only drawback you might run into is that they eject from the top. Not an issue if you use the iron sights like I do, but causes a problem if you are wanting to mount a scope on it.

And there's nothing any uglier than a side-mounted scope.

I wanted a 357 to go with my 357 but any non-30-30 caliber lever gun just got too pricey for a stumping around gun. I ultimately just got the cheapest Marlin 336 in 30-30. I can easily do a 1.5-2.0" group with a 2-7 scope at 100 yards with hornady leverevolution (or whatever) ammo. Less than $400 and I carried for a few years about half a dozen times. Never shot at any past about 125yds, maybe. It far exceeded my expectation at purchase.

Yep, the Marlin Dark series has synthetic furniture and a rail. Folks mentioning Winchester are crazy. Should fit your needs just fine.

Do you have one of the newer models with "micro-groove" rifling or an earlier version? Like others have reported with the newer Marlins, my 336 produced horrible groups with the 160-grain Leverevolution ammo.

"Alas to my issue with the 30-30 and micro groove barrel. I can not get the Hornady Leverevolution to stay on the paper let alone group."

Rossi 92 comes in stainless. You can't get a synthetic stock, but I don't know that you'll need one. Get a skinner peep sight for it, and you won't need a scope. I love mine in 357.
