Excellent job on the hog!!!

However, contrary to your opening post and more in line with your own observations, hogs do NOT have poor eyesight. That is a myth, likely or partially stemming from interpreted behavior on hogs. People think that since they can approach hogs that the hogs obviously cannot see them. That could not be further from the truth. Hogs won't run away from you if they are not fearful of you. Tests on hogs have shown that their forward binocular vision is comparable or better than human vision, but is of a more narrow field of view because of the positioning of their eyes, spanning about 50 degrees. Beyond that, they have poor vision (much like a deer) that spans some everything else except for about 30 degrees directly behind their head.

With that said, hogs do spend quite a bit of their lives looking down at the ground. Just like people texting and walking or texting and driving, this creates a condition called inattention blindness, meaning their their attention is focused on a particular task (such as eating or rooting) and not taking notice of their surroundings. The tactical people would say that the hogs are in 'condition white' (not paying attention to surroundings, poor situational awareness).

What I find particularly interesting about the poor eyesight of hogs is just how well they can see to run through the woods at night when I shoot at them. They can run through the woods without running into trees, which is pretty darned good for animals people think are nearly blind!

Thanks guys! And thanks for all the advice. This has taught me a few things. First old boars are smart and don't make many mistakes. Old boars know their home range. They might not have the best eye sight but they know when one little thing is different. Everything changes at night. $70 hog light mounted on a feeder and a lighted reticle greatly improved the odds.
Cheers!
Now, there are more hogs to kill, let's do this!

I can not imagine that he is seeing anything like a gun out the window at 300 yards. I would think he is winding you.

Congrats on the nice pig.
Hogs have monocular vision using each eye separately. This creates poor depth perception. If you have been walking to your feeder, around your field, etc. checking on things when you arrive for your hunt, the hog had likely spooking from the scent you have left on the ground, not from winding you or seeing a rifle barrel at 300 yards.
