Funny thing about getting older: Your eyesight starts getting weaker but your ability to see through people's BS gets much better.

Greatness. My daddy was a farmer and I am a gardener.

Learned to drive on a tractor like that one. Me too. Did I ever tell you the story about pulling the Memphis girl out of the ditch with my John Deer tractor?

I plowed days and nights with a popping Johnnie Model A with a triple disc Deere plow when I was growing up. When I went to sleep at night, I could still hear the pop, pop, pop while I was trying to go to sleep. It made for long days when I pulled into a 40 acre field and my first round took an hour and half and I only cut 3 foot at each round. It seemed like I never would get finished but I finally did. When I finally got finished, I got to go to another field. At least it was different scenery for the next couple of weeks until I got to go to another field. It sure got old but it had to be done. I also plowed for my uncle and he had a Model B John Deere with a double disc Deere plow. That was really painful because it was even slower then the Model A. I plowed during the day and Dad would plow at night. It made for a LONG summer of tractor work. We went through several tractor upgrades and Dad finally upgraded to a Deere 4010 with a power shift. What a difference 100 horsepower made compared to 27 horsepower. What took weeks to get done now only takes days. Dad's gone, but I kept the 4010 to work the old fields. I don't need to farm but I still do it to keep the tradition alive just for him. I know he appreciates it.

I was by the old place last summer and the tractor was sitting exactly where I had parked it and had a tree growing up through it. Shame
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Ours had steel wheels when my grandfather and dad bought it. When I became of age to start plowing they had converted it to rubber tires. The old steel wheels are still leaning against a tree where they took them off. I drove by them today. Those old wheels weigh about as much as the tractor did.
Those old guys were tough to endure those steel wheels especially in the Hill Country where a lot of the fields were covered in rock. Not much give in steel wheels but it beat hooking up the horses and plowing with a team. Ours was converted to an electric starter but when it failed we would spin the fly wheel. It always started easy if you remembered to open the compression petcocks. Every now and then, it would back fire and almost take your arm off.

And I learned from Dad and his 1915 Dodge that cranking any engine can break your arm in a really bad way.
