Make sure you shoot one before you decide to buy. There is a reason that there are many “like new” S&W 460 and 500’s for sale.

I have seen a number of folks shoot both at, mostly, the Garland range. I don't recall any that were having a seriously good time although several were shocked. And then there's the cost of the ammo.

Love my FA .454 Casull. It’s not exactly a plinking toy but it won’t be going anywhere.

Of the 2 I prefer the 460 for easy versatility of loads as you can also shoot 45 Colt, 454 Casull and 469 for different power levels even in factory loads.

Ive shot them both. Both are a blast to shoot for about 10 rounds. I liked the 500 better. Add a scope and some shooting sticks and you've got a badazz hunting pistol.

I shoot a Ruger 480 in a Super Red Hawk and love it. Changed to a Houge grip and easy shooting.

I agree 100% on the grip change. My 454 Redhawk Alaskan had some fancy wood grips. I shot exactly one round with those beast. After the grip change it was a joy to shoot.

I have the 460XVR, absolutely love it. Use it every year for hunting. I run a Burris FF3 and can keep a 3-4 inch group at 100 yards with a rest. Got reloads for it, 315grain SWC moving around 2150fps.

I really don’t think it’s bad to shoot. My Blackhawk shooting Buffalo Bore has far worse recoil. Wife even shoots the 460, and has killed deer with it.

I used to own the pc version 10 3/8” with a Burris fast fire on it had a few loads that would hover around 1-1.5” at 100 yards..

It wasn’t bad to shoot at all, I’d own another one I kinda regret getting rid of it.
When hand loading make sure to get the thick jacket magnum rated jackets so that you don’t peel the jackets off due to velocity!

I personally think that the 460 is more useful and has a wider range of uses over the 500

I had an NEF Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W years ago... sweet little light-weight Thumper.

Sold it after having my shoulder surgery, just getting too old and brittle... laugh

Reading that brought back traumatic memories...

I had a 45-70 barrel for an Encore, which will handle No. 1 loads. I decided I needed to shoot said loads out of the Encore. It hurt. Bad.
