There are many available but I prefer the rail mounted. Theoretically it gives a more precise level throughout. At least in my thinking. It should level the rifle, plus the scope if set up right. Thoughts?

I prefer rail mount.

It is a scope mounting tool, as well as a long range shooting tool.

I'm assuming it's something you can't see when you're not looking through the scope, which would mean it's only value is to ensure the scope is mounted correctly. I mean, you can't be looking at a level and the cross hairs at the same time can you? It would also appear to assume the axis of the bore and scope are in the same vertical plane, correct?

I've never thought about it but a scope with an internal level that can be seen through the scope seems like something of great value. Or maybe this one allows that and I just can't recognize it from my limited experience.

A internal level that turns a small LED to green when the scope is level seems interesting.

The VX-6HD has an internal level. I don’t know if others that do but they’re probably out there. If you’re rifle is tilted and you’re figuring elevation this is a VERY important tool. Any deviation will cause drastic changes in POI.

I installed one on the LR build. I can see it with my off eye when looking through the scope.

You assume wrong.

The level goes to the side of the non-firing eye. WP's is on the right because he is left handed, left eyed. So, we give it a last check with the right eye before squeezing the trigger.

Axis of scope and bore do not have to be in the same plane.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

Now if I could only shoot well enough to put such a thing to good use.

Isn't that the reason for not canting a rifle when the scope is top mounted? When you cant it, the axis of the bore and scope are no longer in a single, vertical (plumb) plane.

I always use a plumb bob. My natural tendency is to torque the hell out of it. That can be corrected with practice, something I don’t get enough of.

interesting thread here, if you like a pissing contest.

do i need a bubble level?

if you don't want to read it, the best take away from it is... "I'm going to mount a bubble on the underside of the bill, on my drinking hat."

I've recently been getting into all the aspect of making consistent hits at 300-600 yards, which is as far as i got. I've quickly learned that errors/misses by not holding consistent level if far greater than I thought. I assumed i was good enough at eyeballing the verticality of my reticle. NOPE, wrong. I have one rail mount and three scope body mounted. In my mind, in a perfect world, the rail and reticle is square to each other and to the plane that connects the scope centerline and the barrel centerline so it thoeretically shouldn't matter. That said we live in reality, so it seems to me that the rail is the best place to use as the datum because it would hedge best against all the minute out-of-squarness (a real term i use often professionally in the fab world).

I like my rail one mostly because of the actual location. Also my particular rail mount, the liquid is so much dark thus easier to see for me. It was relatively easy to learn to visually check your level before mentally committing to squeezing. Again, since I'm a newb there's one trick i've been implementing. Which is choosing random shots in which I get ready as if I'm gonna squeeze, then I take my concentration/visual focal point away trying only to move my eyes and finally come back to the moment before actually committing to squeezing the trigger. when I do this and I see that my reticle didn't move after looking away, then I know my general position/stance is good. i even dry fire like this some times. Point being, I "discovered" that I can quickly look at my level to look away from my reticle for just the briefest of moments before focusing back on the target.
Honestly, I like the results so far of integrating the level into my shooting. It wasn't as difficult as i though it would be and the pay off is more than what i expected.

I have one rail mount and like it, but it seems like every time I need a new level they're out of stock and I end up with one that goes on the scope.

I mount mine on the optic because I set the scope up to fit myself for a better natural point of aim. Provided you set the level off your reticle and your turrets track true vertical with no deviation it doesn't matter.
