Started thinking about how every year there are a few deer over 150 killed in the county l hunt in but it’s really more the exception than the rule (but it does happen and every year). That being said, a 150 within the part of the county l hunt in would be extremely rare

Just curious how many of you hunt in an a part of TX where a 150 class deer being shot in a given year within any area that falls within that given county would be unheard of or extremely rare.

I hunt in Schliecher county. Lots of deer but I don’t think we have one 150” deer on 3000 acres. I’m sure they’re around but we haven’t seen them. I know there are some great deer around the area. We’ve only been on the place 4 years and have been picky. Mostly does and cull a shot

I hunt in Kendall county and a free range 150” is a rarity.

Not totally unheard of but in the county a free range 150” deer would draw a crowd.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have hunted the same property for 7 years in Lee county, we see a lot of deer but I have never seen one close to 150”. We have taken a couple of 130+ deer and I have seen a couple of pictures of deer that may have broken 140” on neighboring property but I don’t think 150” deer will be possible for us.

I heard same thing about Mason country, just about every 3 years I get to measure or see one, that pushes or breaks it.

150 is a really really good deer, but not out of question for every country in TX, now 160 mark, things start slim up quickly.

Keep the faith, keep head up and keep passing pups

I hunt Navarro county. I don't think we've seen a 150 either on camera or in person in years.

We have them in Young county but a matter of seeing them while in the field as I'm guessing can be said in many TX counties. The 1-3 I have seen on my small property over the years have all been nocturnal visitors.

Very similar to our place in freestone county

Comal, Blanco and Hays counties only rarely get to see 150 class deer.

Very similar to our place in freestone county

same for us in Freestone, we have been MLDP3 for 4 years now and finally getting the other hunters to only take mature deer. We have a few hitting in the 140s up until this year, but I think the Trinity river flooding last year thru late spring displaced some of the larger/mature bucks as I haven't seen many close to mature this year. I see pictures from the Hills place that surround us on several sides that go on up into 150s, a few 160s from what I've heard.

our place in Crockett county, mostly 110-120 with a few that might hit upwards of 140 after 8 years of very strict management and culling. We might have seen 2 that might come close to 150 that were not mature enough at the time, possibly taken on adjoining ranch since we haven't seen in the last couple of years.

my place in Burnet county, tops around 120 with a rare 130+/-.

Id say lots of deer get killed nobody knows about. Lots of deer out there that nobody sees.

My inlaws own 150 acres damn near in town in san Antonio, it hast been deer hunted since they have owned it, so back into the 40's. They put a blind up this year with a cam, shot some little bucks and had a typical 12, 14 counting the split brows on cam as well as another big 10. Lots of deer people don't even know exist. Seen some very small pockets of brush produce a big buck. Not all the time and it doesn't support continual pressure, but given time to mature I think most any place of the sate has plenty potential to crack 150.

Hays and Blanco county see them every year.

Hays county has some nice deer in pockets same as Blanco along the Pedernales River bottom west of 281 up towards round mountain

Comal I would agree it’s more of a rarity.

Our old lease in kendall co produced a 150 every year for 3 years after we left it... the management we started wore off and so have the bucks.

I know of a couple over and some really close to 150 inch bucks from comal co in the last 10 years. Not going to call them common, its the hunting pressure the keeps it from being common.

I hunt in Mills county, and our ranch best is just over 140-he was found dead two years ago. Best harvest, two right at 138. Outside of a buck killed in 1978 our 10 best deer are in the last 15 years. Our neighbor fed a lot of years and they have at least two over 150. County-wide you can tell when it rains and when it doesn't. If it doesn't rain there will only be 1-3 that beat 150 (low fence), and some years none over 140. Good rains, there may be 3-7 over 150. It's gotten a lot better over the years. Other than perhaps a distinct outlier, the country record was under 140 until the late 80s and was only broken by a great 8 that had a ton of stickers to boost his score.

I would say management practices have resulted in an increase of about 15-20" in the average mature buck scores in the area. I'd lay at least half of that towards feed, and the other half towards them living at least one more year than they used to.

Those pockets you speak of, are they high fenced?

Cass and Montgomery counties laugh at the idea of producing a 150” deer.

Not really, I got one that I think will be pushing 150, if not over and I'm in Cass country.

The 2 main ingredients are abundant nutritious browse and maturity. Most of the counties that don’t make the grade have too many mouths to feed.

We have an abundance of predators in Dickens and King so this factor alone keeps population in balance with available nutrition. Large ranches that aren’t over hunted get bucks to maturity. Rain is the most important requirement......

X2

Even in studies on supplemental feeding, the highest scores always come from good rainfall.

The lonly 150 class buck I'm aware of in my area is an escapee from a nearby game ranch several years ago. If anyone got him they've done a good job of keeping their mouth shut about it.

My dad killed an over 150 class buck on a place we leased back in '83. The land owner saw it and talked him into entering it into the county Big Buck contest. He won, and once word got around where it was killed we were priced off the lease.

For that reason, I bet many are killed and not "advertised".
