Twenty years ago they were building this 2 story building, that I drove by twice a day every day. One day my curiousity gor the better of me so I stopped and asked what the cinder block structure was. It was at the start of the building process, and the architect himself told me it was the stairwell and elevator shafts. He also said it was the strongest part of the building and supposedly also fireproof.

Fireproof...and evidently, bombproof! The stairwells were our tornado shelters at the chemical plant I retired from. They were reinforced to stand up to an explosion.
