If it blows easily in the wind, that’s all you need. Of course an unscented powder might be best. Dry grass works for me.

I'm with ya! The guys in Zimbabwe just use campfire ash in a cloth bag. It's mopane wood though, so ...it's magical.

I have a wind indicator filled with talcum powder, I’ve had it since I was 16.
Very handy device

I use the powder in the bottle but I grab a pocket full of milkweed when I can. It floats with the wind currents longer giving me a better idea of where the winds and thermals are swirling around. A bottle of bubbles works great too.

A bic lighter works as good as anything. Medium flame, light, hold out and flame will bend in the lightest breeze.

Thanks for all the replies. I got new FHF bino harness and it comes with wind bottle. Never really used one before, always just used what I could find in the field. Wouldnt have thought of corn starch. Baking powder did come to mind

Must admit I'm a little curious why one would have so much difficulty trying to determine which way the wind is blowing. Another thing that's interesting is how a person knowing the direction doesn't use that knowledge properly.

Some of us are still learning. Heck, I'm 66 and never had any interest in shooting out past 300-400 yards until recently.

Just grab a handful of dried grass and drop it, if you need wind direction. I just feel the breeze hit hit my face and point my nose facing it.

I've used plumb line chalk in the past, but it clogs the squeeze bottle a lot.
Wind isn't always a constant direction. 'Best to know when it's swirling around, if you're truly stalking something close. A whole lot of African professional hunters use some kind of powder to indicate wind direction, but whatdothey know?

I bought the wind indicator in the Orange squeeze bottle, when it got low I refilled with Cabosill I use for composite work, fiberglassing. My Africa PH a cloth bag filled with dry dirt and a few small stones.
