I have a mostly timber deer lease in east Texas and I was wondering who food plots stand up to hogs? What types of plots are you using along with your feeders? I have heard mixed things about hog wire and fencing in small plots..experiences?

I always sow some throw n go in my deer feeder pens and get a pretty good crop. wouldn't really call it a food plot, but my pens are usually 10-11 panels so it is a pretty good swath of green when the rains cooperate.

I would say it’s worth a try. I hunt East Texas and plant 3 food plots each year. Oats and Austrian winter peas. Some years hogs don’t touch a thing. Others they spend a lot of time in them. However, worse case I had they destroyed 50% of plots but still left half to hunt over. But my plots are at least an acre or more.

My experience with throw and grow is that the birds and pigs come along and eat up the seeds before most can sprout.

I've seen cases where hogs will root for grubs in the same area of food plots year after year. Not sure if there are roots of specific plants or certain grubs or worms they're after but they do seem to pick certain spots over others. They definitely have a nose for finding what they prefer.

we put in several food plots at our place about 15-20 miles NE from Fairfield. In the past several years, we have plowed and planted oats with decent success, last year we put in a new plot with wheat. This past year we had better rains shortly after planting and had good results. The hogs haven't really bothered our plots ... we are very sandy soil.

I've found the hogs only graze on our oats. They have never torn up our plots.

on a different note, my place in central TX, SE Burnet county is pretty rocky, I have cleared several small food plot areas of rocks and planted, the hogs tear those up like they are root plowing but haven't bothered the ones in the sandy soil near Fairfield.

We have done food plots the last two years. I have seen hogs eating in the plots but never dig them up.

A few years ago I planted daikon radishes and the hogs rooted them up slowly till only a small area was left. But they haven't dug up any of my winter peas, rye, or wheat plots.
