Even seating the long/heavy bullets deep, I bet the 7wsm still outshines the other short action offerings in a short action. Yes it does. And you don't have to seat 180's super deep. The one we built last year for Ryan runs 180's like a champ. Seat to mag length and move on.

Well, I am a 280 Ai fan and it will be the rifle that I do most of my hunting with the rest of my life. It is a Ruger No.1A with a 25" barrel, that is an Exclusive with Classic sporting Arms. 125 were made, serial numbered JDC-001 thru 125. It is called the Joe Clayton Classic and was made to honor the man who wrote the book on the Ruger No.1 rifle. The 280 AI comes really close to the 7mm RM, with a lot less recoil!

I think most would consider the big three, all around deer hunting rifles to be the 270, 30-06 and 7 Mag.
Why isn't the 280 held in similar regard? Best thing you can do to a .473" bolt face long action is screw a .280 A.I. barrel on it. Amen Redsnake, I know you have a 280 or an ai, had or have you ever considered the 280 Sherman? The Sherman wildcats ate pretty new to me but I am impressed by the 338 Sherm I did. When my tikka 280ai barrel is shot out, I’ll definitely do another 7mm — maybe another 280ai but a little more umph would be nice like a 7 Rem Mag or 28 Nos. The 7-6.5 PRC and the 7mm Sherman Mag are enticing. Even thought of looking at doing a Wby 7-6.5 RPM

My .280AI is an Encore from Bullberry, and it quickly became my favorite rifle. Honestly I think it's just as much the platform as the caliber that I like, but 160gr accubonds absolutely hammer critters. I have a 700 in 708 as well, it gets almost equal use. Don't need or want a mag, so not much else for me to do with a .284-anything.
