No digs at anyone that does, but what is purpose of seeing Drivers license or LTC or requiring bill of sale when doing a private/non dealer sale to another individual?

Thanks for explaining.

Peace of mind that hopefully you're not selling to someone who should not have a firearm.

The other part is a paper trail.

To be determined

Makes them feel better.

Had a guy in here a few years back that would only sell me the gun if I went to a FFL and completed the paper work. He didn’t care that I was a LEO, he thought that was a sure fire way to make sure the gun wasn’t in his name.

Thanks BP and TH. That’s kinda what I thought. I pass by those that require such even if interested in their item.

I know that can sell however they wish and that’s fine.

I’m leery of giving ID info but will and have done it. In the end, I’m not the criminal.

Bingo. I had an experience several years ago that could have gotten ugly if I did not have all the buyers info on a pistol I sold.

How could it have gotten ugly?

Pistol was found in a less than savory home, where multiple felonies were being committed, authorities call me because I was the "registered owner". Up until that day, I did not know there was any kind of registry.

I worry about buying a gun and the seller reporting it stolen. Or just buying a flat out stolen gun.

I'm one that prefers sending them to an FFL, sold a shotgun to the wife's cousin, a week later LEO is calling me saying she threatened to kill someone with it
If your against it, it makes me wonder what you have to hide, just saying confused2

There's not supposed to be a Federal registry per se. At least there used not to be. It involved tracking back by SN from the manufacturer, to the distributor, to the dealer FFL yellow sheet the buyer had to fill out at final transfer to individual. This may have changed by now but that's how it used to work. I know of one case that is exactly how it happened that the original buyer was located.

As the buyer, if the gun is found to be reported stolen, I want to be able to shoe the police a bill of sale showing that I purchased it.
As a seller, the law requires that you do not sell the gun to someone who is not legally allowed to own it. If I see an LTC, I KNOW that they can own it.

Ill start doing a bill of sale , my worries come from buying a gun and then the seller reporting it stolen.

I’ll put it this way. Years ago I sold a pistol to someone on this page. Couple years later I get a call asking questions about it. Was found at a crime scene. Covers your backside. I rarely ask for bill of sale and was dang sure glad I had a bill of sale.

Same thing I went through, a buyer from this site.

I can tell you this, once you fill out the form you better document the sale of that gun very well. They had a deputy at my house and my wife called me on my cell phone.

I prefer a bill of sale when buying or selling a firearm. I also prefer to see a LTC or deal with a LEO

I keep a list of guns I have sold and who I sold them to.

A paper trail on a firearm is just plain common sense in today’s world.

For one I am selling:
If it is a firearm that I have filled out paperwork on when I bought it, I will ask for ID just to see how the person acts. If they get squirrelly about showing me an ID, I pass on the deal.

If it is one I have not done any paperwork on, I will grab the cash and beat them out of the parking lot before they have time to change their mind.

Someone in possession of a LTC doesn't guarantee they can legally possess a firearm. Most people who have them suspended or revoked, don't surrender the actual card back to DPS as they are required to.

Don’t even recall who it was anymore. Wasn’t anyone that was really active.
