Whenever I see news reports like the one below I'm often reminded of a neighbor who took his own life in he and his wife's garage. To say the guy was loud and carried an huge ego was an understatement. Still, after it happened I wondered if there was anything I or anyone could have done to get him to take a different perspective on life and other people. I had considered inviting him and his wife to our church but there never seemed to be a good time, or perhaps I didn't think there was any chance of him taking me up on it.

Has anyone ever been in a situation where you were able to talk a person out of committing suicide?

No, but I gave a guy a Snickers candy bar to stop a hissy fit.

It’s a shame he had to take the wife and son out with him.

My grandmother shot herself after church one Sunday in front of my dad and his siblings. The ripple that had through those lives was huge. All 5 had substance abuse problems, anger issues, and depression.
People that commit suicide are the most selfish people there are.

People usually feel comfortable talking about a problem with any part of the body except for their brain.

Worse things than killing yourself.............just do it clean. I will, if able, when the time comes.

I cant count on 2 hands how many I know that killed themselves...........maybe 4 hands.

Yes, and it was very unnerving. His wife called me and I went over and he was in bedroom with shotgun in his hand.
30 minutes later he handed it to me. Ten years later he died in car wreck, hit by drunk.

I've witnessed it a couple of time when I was a kid ... my dad was big into AA (sober ~45 years when he passed) and traveled all over the state to meetings and was a sponsor to many. One day, we were at his shop when the phone rang, it was the sheriff asking him for help with one of the guys known around town as a drunk/druggy, just got out of prison and had a bunch of sheriff officers and city police officers at bay outside his house. It was only 6-8 blocks from the shop, so dad said lets go. We drive up there, weave thru all the cop cars, and parked right in front of the house. Dad got out, talked to the sheriff a minute, then started talking to Johnny from the short sidewalk, inching forward, finally up on the porch talking thru the screen door to him while holding a shotgun pointed at my dad. He continued to talk to him and finally opened the screen door and went inside. The LEO were freaking out that he went inside. After about 20-30 minutes, dad hollered out the door that he was willing to come out but everyone but the sheriff had to back away and completely off his street. After some hesitation, the sheriff got the other LEO to back away, and dad came out holding the shotgun with Johnny right behind him drenched in blood. They walked over to the sheriff's car and got in, my dad motioned me to follow in his truck. I was scared as I was only about 12 years old, no drivers license and surrounded by 3/4 of the law enforcement from town. I fell in behind the sheriff's car and over to the hospital. They all went inside and I just sat waiting. finally what seemed like an eternity, they came out, got back in the sheriff's car and dad motioned me to follow again. We get to the jail and they all go inside again. Dad finally comes out and he has a lot of blood on him too. He got in the truck and said lets go back to the shop... during that next few minutes, he told me what was going on finally. Johnny had just gotten out of prison, found his wife left him and he hit the bottle, got way down on himself and took a straight razor between every one of his fingers on both hands. Some neighbors got concerned hearing things breaking in the house and call the PD. Johnny grabbed his shotgun and was threatening to kill any one that stepped foot on his property other than my dad ... that's why the sheriff had called, knowing Johnny really had nothing to live for and that was likely the only way to get him out alive.

Needless to say, it was a real eye opener to a pre-teen that had grown up going to many AA meetings, and trips to bars for dad to talk people down that had fallen off the wagon ... that was the first time I had seen that much blood, at least on a human.

I totally agree that is a very selfish act but some people just don't have the will to live and might want to take anything they can with them. Sad

Yes. He had a gun in his mouth was crying and at the end of his rope. It was pretty scary. He had got a million dollar settlement when he was 18 and blew through it all. Got mixed up in drugs... a real mess. That much money for a kid can get you into trouble. He now is cleaned up, has a great job and is enjoying life. I’m real glad I was there.

A gifted ability to extend compassion, understanding, and encouragement to others is no doubt something that comes from the Creator. Some of us may have that gift and don't know it.

I thought I did, then about 1.5 hours later I got a call from his wife that said he stuck a shotgun under his chin and did it anyway.

I tried.... the selfish bastard

Yes.

If you find yourself feeling useless, remember it took 20 years, trillions of dollars, and four presidents to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.

Sometimes the Universe puts you in the same situation again to see if you’re still a dumbass.

I hear that a lot but I don't agree with it.

I had someone really close to me take their own life about 8 months ago and can tell you that he was far far far from a selfish person. There are people right here on this forum that would not be here without him. I was at his house the day before he took his own life and had no idea what was on his mind.....NOBODY DID. He had everything going for him and he would have been the last person on earth I would have thought would do something like that.

I assume people think its a selfish act because of the pain it inflicts on those they leave behind. I can assureyou that he thought about those he would leave behind long and hard before he did it. He must have felt that whatever pain he was in was far greater than the pain those he would leave behind would feel or he wouldn't have done it. You just never know what is going on in someones mind for them to feel like suicide is the best choice.

And to answer the the original question......no I have never stopped anyone from committing suicide. I damn sure would have tried though if I had only known.

My old and dearest friend and fellow Jarhead, Pete. I tried, and I was success for a time, but finally he did it. I miss him every day.

You can live a lifetime and not have as good a friend as that. I always stocked Budweiser for him. He hated Miller beer.

My wife must be chopping onions.

I have not stopped anyone, but have known several who have committed suicide. It sux for those left behind, but I think for some, the feeling of depression is so deep, and the hurting so overwhelming, they think they are doing the world a favor. Like others have experienced - without going into details, a friend's wife recently killed herself. No warning to those on the outside - by all appearances, happy family, good career, lots of friends, etc. He found her, and by all reports, was as baffled as anyone by what she did. Lots of demons out there...

Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem, hence it being the most selfish thing a person can do.

I've always heard too that people who try and fail are glad they did fail.

people who try and fail don’t really want to die they want help. If you want to die it’s not hard to make it happen.
