What do you prefer to hunt, but more importantly why?
I don't understand how anyone can prefer deer hunting over ducks. More activity all the way around is what gets me.

I've also heard that's there's deer hunters, and then there's duck hunters that hunt deer, but not vice versa.

I'd prefer answers from people that have done both. If you haven't done one or the other, comment on why if you don't mind, but refrain from voting.

Love duck hunting but hate eating duck or goose. Can eat deer everyday and not get tired of it. Besides, I bowhunt mostly so the season lasts a long time and the anticipation and excitement of getting a big buck w/in range is pretty darn fun.

I took a break after my dog passed, I’ll be back out it next year pretty hard with new pup.

Traditionally I’m hard at WT, MD, PH and elk until split then switch to duck and pheasants

Duck. For me, it's more of a social event during the actual hunt itself. Both duck and deer hunting involves the comraderie at the "camp" but during the hunt itself, it's still there while duck hunting.

I don't disagree with that, but I guess I'm not patient enough to wait for the deer to come in.

Duck hunting lost me when non toxic shot was mandated. It sucks so bad compared to lead. I can shoot lead shot at doves, clays or just to make a splash, over water all day long. But not waterfowl, It's just ignorant.

I've hear ya on that. Check out boss shotshells though. It's bismuth and hits like lead. 2 3/4" #5 is the most popular round for just ducks.

Duck. After highscool I haven’t hunted ducks like we used too. We would be on the water at 3am to claim our spots, hit the local ponds before class, and spend 2 weeks a season chasing them in Louisiana. We were ate up with duck hunting. Then college happened and we all went different ways. I’ve always deer hunted, and found that to be a more solitaire event and it’s stuck for the past few 15 years.

Deer.

I thoroughly enjoy duck hunting....like it a whole lot actually. The sound of cupping wings, the variety of species, the sounds, etc. I love the whole ordeal. But if I had to pick one over the other the ducks would lose.

Deep down in my soul I’m a big game hunter. But I do love shooting birds

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Deer for me. Duck hunted several years ago and never mastered identifying ducks in flight. I enjoy hunting deer with my friends and family and watching them grow year to year. I enjoy the meat from the deer over duck also.

I enjoyed hunting ducks, but I gave it up and sold my decoys and waders. Why? Because I'm good with a rifle, pistol, and bow. Give me a halfway reasonable shot, and I will hit it. However, I evidently can't hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun. I'm no good at dove hunting either. Enjoy the hell out of it, but I suck.

I enjoy both but do a lot more deer a lot more often than ducks, always have. I do like to get in on a few duck or goose hunts with friends every year.

This is what got me into reloading and made me a better shot. Bismuth is expensive. When you pull that $1.75 (can’t remember exact cost) trigger each time. You will learn to pick your shots better!

Quit duck hunting when they went to steel shot. That tells how long it's been for me but I loved it. Now only deer and whatever walks.

Deer for me, I think my processor cheats me on the meat when I take him ducks.

I like both but I prefer deer hunting. Duck hunting, especially public land has changed since the whole Duck Dynasty thing started. It's gotten way too crowded and competitive. Deer hunting has changed too, but it doesn't seem like deer hunters are as tightly wowned as the new duck hunting crowd.

Haven’t read the thread yet.

Duck hunting is great, I’d rather shoot a big buck.

I prefer duck hunting. Mostly because I like the challenge. Waking up early. Beating others to the “x” (public hunter). The best part is getting the ducks to decoy. When I get the ducks cupped up and dropping in I consider that a successful hunt. Even if I miss.

I got into deer hunting to involve my kids. I can’t see my kids waking up at 3am and sitting in the dark for hours waiting in the cold, rainy, snowy mornings. Nor do I want to listen to then cry or complain. So we deer hunt. Wake up an hour or so before legal shooting hours and sit in a blind with the heater going.

Ducks, it's all about the dogs for me.

I was born/raised in S. La and didn't shoot anything without feathers (aside from the occasional Nutria and Rabbit) until 5 years or so ago and I'm in my 50's. There's almost nothing to replicate the duck hunting ritual of deke's, calling and watching a duck make the turn and commit to a visit. Only to be outdone by having a dog with you that you trained. Also, whoever invented the Layout blind, should be given the Medal of Freedom... laying down while hunting, flag

I've since discovered hog hunting and thermals. Shooting a hog on the run with a thermal equipped rifle at night is pretty much the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

I'll shoot a deer when they get in front of the hogs during the day and they're in season.

Same as Charlie, growing up in Collin county we didn't have a deer season or any deer for that matter. All we hunted was doves and ducks. I paid for a deer lease for the past two years that was less than 45 minutes away. I sat in a stand 3 times in 2 years. I was even out there every Sunday to check on animals and never wanted to go sit. Back in McKinney I set up some poacher cameras on the back of our place and caught a couple different 140-150 class bucks on it, everybody thought I was insane for not setting a stand back there to try and kill them. I guess it's just not appealing to me, I would love to have one good mount for the wall but other than that I'm good with shooting ducks and popping a couple of does every other year to eat. I have been pretty well taking a break from ducks for the past few years, mainly due to kids/work/injured dog. Now our pup has the green light so he got to hunt the last couple weeks of this season, so I'm betting next year we're hitting it a little harder. Watching a good dog work is a whole other part of waterfowl hunting, probably my favorite

I asked the same question to my son. His answer was, let's hunt duck in the morning and deer in the afternoon! If you have an easy set up and good location to hunt from, duck hunting is more fun. But, duck hunting is much more work and if you do not have access to an easy and quick set up for duck, it's easy to pick deer hunting. We have a 50 acre lake with 2 different duck blinds set up on our deer lease. So, going duck hunting is easy and not a lot of work.

Ducks but I also love to deer hunt. I would rather hunt geese than ducks. While I’m at it I would rather hunt upland birds than waterfowl. Leasing a lot of property to deer hunters has taken a lot of the joy out deer hunting for me. Maybe it’s just my bad luck but in my experience it will either bring out the best or the worst in a lot of grown men.
Appreciation of good bird dogs is one of my weaknesses. I also really enjoy shooting a shotgun. Without the dogs though, I will not go bird hunting.
