I am really liking the 6.5 cal 120 grain Gold Dots. Good accuracy in my guns during load workup, and from everything I hear terminal performance/weight retention is very good. The problem I am having, and it seems to be a somewhat common problem with the Gold Dot, is it seems to build pressure early and not really give the velocities I want. Somewhere around 2200 fps in a 16" barrel. Now granted, the only powders I have tried so far are Benchmark and TAC, but even with them I am way off of 123 SST speeds. I can get those up in the 2375 fps range.

I know moly coating was a fad way back in the day, one that for the most part seems to have passed on. I did it for a while, coating several types of bullets, but haven't done it in years due to several concerns. Probably, buried somewhere back in all my stuff, I imagine I still have my kit for doing that.

Here is my thought process. According to internet rumor mill, the reason for the Gold Dot building pressure faster is two-fold. One reason is a longer bearing surface. The other is the jacket is not conventional guilding metal, but instead more like a thick plated bullet that is bonded to the core. So I am thinking, why not moly coat the Gold Dots, slick them up and make them less grabby, and see what that does to velocities?

A big concern of mine is the reports of moisture combining with the moly in barrels producing corrosion in some instances. At least way back when, I seem to remember this as a potential issue. Shooting suppressed tends to trap moisture from combustion and I don't want to cause a larger problem than what I am trying to fix.

Thoughts?

The old rule of thumb was about 100 fps gain from moly. Try it and see. I'm assuming this is in a Grendel.

From the tests that Brian (Double Naught Spy) does on his pigs with the 120 GD, I have been highly impressed with that bullet. I'll be shooting the 150 grain GD in my 308 next hunting season.

Yes, in a Grendel AR, i should have stated that.

The tests that DNS has been running is what has prompted me to try the Gold Dots.

Do you have any thoughts/experience on the corrosion issue with moly and moisture? Seems I read something about it long ago, but don't know if it was ever proven or not.

No, haven't heard about the moisture issue. I don't run moly and it's not for me. But it does have it's applications.
