Finished up the hunting season with a doe hunt in mid-January. While enjoying a few libations the topic came up "When should we come back to the ranch to hunt for sheds?" You Hill Country guys have any ideas or rules-of-thumb on when to start?

When I lived and hunted in the Hill Country I started to see a few in late Feb till mid March. The majority started to hit the ground from the March 15th till then 27th. You are fighting the spring green up and growth if it gets rainy and warms up.

I usually start looking last week of March sometimes sooner sometimes later depending on what I’m seeing on cameras.

Look up and down the fence lines. They often drop when the deer hits the ground also always look around the feeders. Start looking in late Feb.

as others have stated, it varies depending on the area. I usually start looking in east TX late Feb. and wait until late March for my place in West TX.

I’ve heard that so many times but of the 100+ sheds I’ve found in the last few yrs I’ve never found one on a fence line and I’ve walked many a fence line looking.

Good question!

I just found one by my protein feeder two weeks ago, which seemed very early to me

For the last few years in far North OK, we were seeing Bucks who had already dropped by the 1st and 2nd week of Jan!

I was in southern Coleman Co earlier this week and saw two bucks feeding in a wheat field with half racks, but most were still fully antlered.

I just took this pic yesterday in the Canyon Lake area. He any other bucks in my area are still running some last minute does. I thought it was winding down, but I'm sure it won't be much longer before the last doe holdouts finally give it up so these poor bucks can rest.

In the Mason/Menard area they have mostly dropped by the opening of Spring turkey. Several things happen at this time, turkeys are gobbling, sheds are dropping, snakes are crawling.

Hunting for sheds...

confused2 Have ya tried the yellow pages?

On me hog hunts down at OSBWMA would sometimes find them mid Feb-March hunts, yet have seen some deer with anters yet.
Up here in the colder winters the older bucks can shed late Jan.
bounce always awesome ta find sheds...
Best wishs.

Came home from Concho County On Friday Feb. 07. Was there for three days and saw a total of about 20 bucks - all still sporting full head gear
