Startup founders and spouses always transfer stock to settle. It would be foolish to sell first as that would create a taxable event. Founders are in at a zero basis so you get taxed on the entire gain. She got 25 percent of his founders stock, approximately 19.7 million shares. That's worth around $43 Billion based on today's price.

He's smart to sell some now and would be smarter to sell more than the 3 percent that he's sold so far this year since taxes are relatively cheap at current rates and very likely to go up in the future. He's paper rich but only draws $81K a year salary. In ten years he's only sold 18 million shares and post divorce he has over 50 million shares left worth over $100 Billion. He has to sell stock to pay for his private space race and he's doing his best to give away most of his money in his lifetime.

Don't get me wrong, Amazon has won the data war. They built the data and commerce platform so they aren't going anywhere but one of the most valuable lessons I've learned in my life from a mentor, a F500 founder, is it's not money until you sell. At his age he should start to sell much more and enjoy life.

I do 85% of my shopping on Amazon. Ive even gotten to where I buy my non-perishable foods on there. ITs just too easy with next day or two day free shipping. The only thing I buy at the grocery store is perishables. I don't think there is any way Amazon is in trouble, I only see it taking over more and more in the future.
