I have never hunted any public land, but bought a place on Fork this year and have been thinking about trying a little public land hunting at either OSBWMA or Cooper. I'm a little worried about bumping into somebody on public land as I have never hunted land that somebody else hunts at the same time. If I go I will most likely try to go on weekdays to decrease the chances of something like that happening. I would imagine that very little spot/stalk hunting occurs out on these public lands? Public land hunting is awesome and not a ton of people really do it in Texas. I rarely run into anyone hunting public and if I do it's around where I park and not in the woods. And the majority of people who do hunt public, park and walk 100 yards in and that's about it. So if you like to move in deep, the chances are you will be all alone out there. I stalk hunt a bit on public, but it's not easy in most parts of Texas given the excessive amount of brush. A climbing tree stand is going to improve your odds significantly for public hunting in Texas. I've never met another person in Texas who stalk hunts and most seem to believe it's impossible to stalk hunt whitetail on Texas public - the reality is though, they just don't have the proper hunting skills You must be jealous, if you could afford it you'd surely hunt 200" deer in high fence enclosure

Merry Christmas ya'll. I will miss deer season... fortunately you can get hogs at Bardwell until the end of March. And Richland Creek Like an hour down the road from Bardwell opens in the spring. I will get me some good public pig hunting in this year. I have to, because I just got a new smoothbore slug barrel with rifle sights for my mossberg 835 I have never taken a boar either. I can't wait!

So, 8 vehicles including yours. 5,158 Acres. If 1 hunter per vehicle, that's almost 645 acres per hunter. Even if 2 hunters per vehicle, that's still very few hunters for a very large area. It should definitely be a rare occurrence running into someone in the woods when those are the numbers.
That's pretty much my public land hunting experience all the time, on all public lands that I've hunted. I don't know where all these horror stories about public lands overpopulated with hunters that you run into everywhere came from. I mean even the areas close to huge populations - like Sam Houston NF - Sure, on a "busy" day I might see a few dozen trucks parked along the side of the road while I'm headed to my area, but the place is 161,508 acres. Never ran into a single individual in the woods there last year.
I think perhaps the horror stories come from these people who park and just walk the bare minimum away from the road and start hunting - since that is the bulk of public hunters, I can see how maybe those people run into each other on occasion. twas going threw the posts in this thread... 8 vehicles/5,158 acres... & most are hunting short distance from parking areas... Unit #120 was several times bigger. It was a rifle deer/hog hunt... First time hit it, twas a baradge of hunter orange trees... Once ya got past it... Ppretty much had place ta yourself... Learned were vehicles parked, lots of traffic. So parked away from area, like you did... Deer & hogs DO patern hunters... Did the leasing thing, every one had stands, feeders, food plots... Their were deer taken, but majority of the bucks that made it 2-3 hunting seasons, learned how ta pattern hunters.. The ya here in the HF discussions, " Ya wont see big racks on LF, Free Ranging deer... " Tis just that... ... older bucks, foradged on natural browse... Ya haveta learn ta think outa the box... Twas blessed that my work schedual, offered me chance ta hunt leases, whin others couldnt make it... & like on public land, opening, hollidays, & closing for the ones that didnt tag out were the busy times on lease. As have posted several times, " public land hunting tis NOT an execative hunt... " Doing the leg work, enjoyed the hog hunts, any legal means, ya can find the beding, trail's, scrapes, rubs, & food suplies, while hog hunting... Found sheds, ya can find, the old hunting stands, & such... Good exercise, help the sourounding land owners, hogs & deer use it cause of the less hunting preasure... finding, these twas always the easy part, work begain, whin ya had one down... Hogs, for me, tried several ways, dragging, carring, (if small enough), helped guy with a cart take hog out.. Back pack, no gutting, twas fastest, easiest way... Had health problems, used this forum, ta try getwith others ta enjoy the advantages of public land hunting... Got few weeks left ta enjoy some AWESOME hog hunting, thars several other place, have hunted each, OSBWMA trwas just down the road, & been from one end ta the other... Many great memories... Keep your head held high & your powder dry... Ya can bet your boots, i'd be thar , taking advantage of it...

That's OSBWMA though. And not representative of the vast, vast majority of walk-in hunts in Texas. They are mostly open fields, shotgun only for doves and small game. And small enough you can see people scattered in every direction.
I agree that most people are too lazy to break brush in the thick ETX woods. I am sure you can have your iwn stand out there undisturbed for years to come.
The largest "wilderness" in Texas is like 13,000- someodd acres. There are deer leases that dwarf it by comparison. Not a whole lot of piblic land for much of anything in Texas.
For what it is worth, I am still grateful for the littl dove fields. Even if you don't see nothing but people, at least you have a reason to screw around out there with your kid and he gets to carry a gun
