Some of you may remember almost a year ago that our Izzy broke her hind leg. We didn’t see exactly what happed but the short story is that my wife tossed a ball into a clearing and Izzy came back with the ball and a broken leg. The surgery was expensive and the recovery was long and had a lot of complications. Here are pics form the original break. Once she recovered from the surgery and aftercare all seemed well and she has been back to her regular self. We had a full release from the surgery center, everything heals great and she was good to go. Fast forward to this past weekend and we were playing on the river. I tossed a few sticks into the river for the dogs to retrieve and were all having a grand ole’ time. When it was Izzy’s turn at a stick she was heeled on the river bank waiting for my “fetch” command. As soon as I released her she leapt off the bank and into the water. She was yelping before she hit the water. As soon as I got my hands on her I knew it was bad. We got her in for x-rays this morning and they confirmed the worse. She had broken her other “good” hind leg in the exact same spot as the previous leg. This new break was worse than the previous. After talking to our vet and the surgeon and exploring all options the overwhelming census was to euthanize her. There was obviously something wrong with her bones or genetics that caused her legs/bones to be weak. Repairing the second break would put pressure on the previous repair most likely leading to additional injuries in the future. She was a hard charging ball of energy. There was no slowing her down. It hasn’t totally set in yet and I’m in disbelief that we lost out beloved Izzy this am. She was a vital part of our lives and member of our family. We have a lot of great memories from the short 5 years she was in our lives. We love and will miss her terribly.

Aw man, no.
Our Izzie is gimping on her right rear but getting better. She’s prone to hurting her hind leg too. Just a muscle pull this time.
I feel your pain and it’s heartbreaking.

I hate to hear that. How was she bred and what kennel did she come out of?

How was she bred and what kennel did she come out of? We got her from a member here at THF but I don’t think he was a “breeder.” If I remember correctly the breeding was an accident on a hunting trip. Both parents were pedigreed dogs, AKC. Because I never intended to trial or breed Izzy, I never even registered her. The one thing that that will keep me up at night for a long time is thought that we spayed her too early. I think she was around 9mos old when we had her spayed. This was based on our vets recommendation. I can’t help but wonder if that is a contributing factor. Knowing what I know now, I would have waited much longer to spay. .

Hate to hear that for you; good looking GSP which are usually known to be pretty healthy and durable. She definitely was not going to slow down at 5 so probably a wise choice.

Misfire, my condolences to you and your family. I feel for you man. The thing I have found that helps fill the void most is a puppy and the new beginnings and promise they bring.

So very sorry for your family's loss.

Sorry for your loss. I know what you are going through. Lost my 4.5 year old GSP in December. There are still some tough days. Best of luck.

Thank you everyone for the love; it means a lot. This has been a really tough week and as you all know the only thing that helps is time.
