Scooter, our almost 14 year old heeler, started acting funny Wednesday evening. Every now and then her leg would just give out. Different leg each time. Over the past year, she’s really started showing her age...hearing is going and her eyes aren’t what they used to be, but she’s still been really happy. Yesterday morning she was drunk as a skunk, couldn’t walk straight, her head was cocked to the side, vomiting, and she would fall down from time to time. I looked into her eyes and they kept twitching back and forth. Knowing it’s getting to be “about that time”, I took her to the vet to get checked out hoping for the best, and found out she had vestibular disease. He told me it comes on super fast (over night for us), lasts anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks, then it’ll disappear almost as fast as it came on. He also told me if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, to bring her back (mainly due to her age) and it’ll be time to make some decisions... he gave us some meds for the nausea and the vertigo and sent us on our way. This morning is about the same as yesterday. So have any of yalls pups ever had it and how long did it last for you? My oldest and Scooter.

Never heard of it, but I’m glad it’s not a life long illness. Hope it lasts closer to three days than two weeks.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

I hadn't either and we've had multiple dogs my entire life. Sure hope it's short lived because I hate seeing the old girl terrified of what's going on with her. .

Had a male french Brittany that had it. Stumbled around for a few days and was fine. He did have a more relaxed upper lip on his right side similar to a person that had a stroke. he was about 8 at the time. He died at 10 with heart problems. R.I.P. Jake (little knucklehead)
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I’ve never heard of it as well. Hope she recovers quicker rather than later.

Never heard of it but good luck. Tough watching them deal with something like that. We had one get lymphoma and his final two days were much like you are describing...it was like he was drunk and couldn't get his bearings and had labored breathing to go along with the disorientation. Sad to watch.
Wish you all luck that she recovers quickly!

I appreciate it yall. We're keeping an eye on her. Knock on wood, her breathing is fine so far. One of my parents friends had a dog get it. He only had it for about 6 or 7 days, but still has a slight tilt to his head. The head tilt can stick around after the fact, so I've been told.

Thanks again yall. She's getting better, but still very slow to eat and drink. She's at least wagging her tail now and isnt as "drunk". Her eyes are better and aren't flickering like they were.

Glad she is getting better! It's scary when our fur children get sick.

One of my Aussie's had that happen twice in her latter years. It took a few weeks before she would be close to normal. She was never totally the same after the first time though.
I pray that yours recovers fully and quickly!
