What twist is your barrel and what ammo are you shooting?

If it’s that old it’s a 1:14 and the max bullet weight is going to be a 55g. I would also check the action screws. I once sold an excellent rifle that had a loose action screw when I didn’t know any better and I’m the screw that made it loose. It shot great until I took the stock off to adjust the trigger. The new owner called me that evening and told me what he had found.

slide a dollar bill between the barrel and stock and see if it's free floated all the way down.

Maybe you have some contact between the barrel and stock. Barrel heats up, pressure point changes and moves your point of impact. Just a guess, that or your stock is loose.
I had a 110E. Its the cheap version of a cheap gun. Not saying that in a bad way, but stock fit and finish wasn't the priority....

Did the barrel rust? I once bought an absolutely beautiful Schults & Larsen in 7x61 S&H only to find the barrel hadn't been oiled in 30 or 40 years.

Aftermarket barrels covers a wide selection. Shaw barrels being the cheapest I know of and they are $199. Evening being the cheapest they are a serviceable accurate barrel. Available in various lengths, profiles and twists from many manufacturers at a wide price range. Expect $200-500. You will have to figure out what you want, your price range, then search manufacturers.
Just google “223 savage barrel”, you will have more options than you can stress over.

When one is acting up, I start simple, and go from there.
1. Action screws tight 2. Barrel free-floated (with any front support, many will not tolerate a front bag or bipod) 3. Scope base tight 4. Scope rings tight
If you can check yes on all those, then the next step is scope problem and/or ammo problem.

Letting it cools between shots helps. On mine, i can get 3, maybe 4, shots close. 5th and beyond go from bad to worse. Barrel cools and start over.

If you can check yes on all those, then the next step is scope problem and/or ammo problem. If those s check and the bore looks good and action lockup is tight, swap the scope for one you know is good and try again. Also check the muzzle crown and the nut behind the trigger.

Whenever this has happened to me it has been a loose action or a loose scope/mount or in one case just a broken scope.

Any updates for those who enjoy learning from the problems others had to deal with?

This is a decent reasonably priced one. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1007367010?pid=718023Before someone posts that there are others that are more accurate, yes there are. However, any decent torque wrench is better than none. The Wheeler will work just fine for this purpose. If money is no object, they go up from there in cost, but really are not necessary for this purpose.

If money is no object, they go up from there in cost, but really are not necessary for this purpose. I looked into high end inch pound torque wrenches. It led me to Snap-On, Matco, ect. And that equated to $150-ish. So I bought the F.A.T. wrench and have been using it for years. Sure, the business I'm in now can justify a high end inch pound torque wrench, but I do not see the need. What I am doing is working. O.P. I'm glad you found the problem, now to fix the problem. But sometimes diagnostics is 90% of the battle.

I have been using a FAT wrench for years and like said above, it might not be the best but it is dang sure better then not having one.

Gotta order another set of rings So you stripped it out before and that's what caused the bad shooting, or you stripped it while checking it and still don't know where the problem lies?
