To be fair, it’s not really tough to kill a bunch of 1,2 & 3 year old bucks either though.

A lot of judgments on here without knowing any facts. For all we know those deer were taken off a 50,000 acre ranch. In 2019 the limit in that county was 2 bucks and 2 does per hunter.

Outstanding pictures. In the first one, with the man in the far right with a cap on with flaps tied on top, I wore a cap similar to that in my first deer season in NM in the late 1950's, it was red for hunter safety, so Dad said. Thanks for sharing.

That could also be where the photographer was from. Just because your saw the picture at the ranch or they are pictured at that location does not mean they were killed there. Could have been killed up north of New Braunfels or even further west. Then chances are they were all killed on that ranch. One things for sure is they were all cleaned and then the meat was used. A lot of sausage was made back then or the meat was canned to store it. I know when I grew up we still made a lot of sausage.
Notice there were no tags on any of them like you would be required to have today. I know in the early 60's we had bag limits and could not take any does or spikes.

The person who owned the picture ( it was his family in them) told me that they were taken in Guadalupe county at their ranch.

Did not specify where in Guadalupe county though.

Probably killed at different locations then brought to the house in pictures. Then they had a old fashioned sausage making fest. Like STX said bet they did not waste anything. Interesting

I would be willing to bet money they came from south of Seguin, down in what is known as the sand hills or over toward Gonzales. This is all south of I-10. A friend of mine farms north of Geronimo and sees a few bucks in that area quite often. He also owns a ranch south east of Seguin and with out fail every year connects with a dang nice buck off his place.

All I know for a fact is that my Grandparents had a farm in Guadalupe County. It was between Marion, McQueeney and Seguin. They owned it from the mid 1930's until the mid 1970's. Theirs was mostly fields but a neighbors was mostly brush. He never killed a deer off the place. And it was not because he did not want too.

Yep, not many on here old enough to have hunted back before corn feeders, deer stands, etc. I miss the old days of hunting.

Thanks for sharing! History has changed over the years and we have learned from history (hopefully). Don't misjudge our forefathers/mothers hunting. I'm sure nothing was wasted and communal skinning, sausage and jerky making was common.

Great pics. Love seeing what those folks were wearing. It's obvious that gathering was a major affair.

My Grandfather grew up on a large ranch in Mason County in the 30s and early 40s. He said when he was in high school he would shoot bucks and take them into town. Said 10 pts and even 12 pts were common then. Hunters from the cities who were going home empty handed would buy the buck from him so they could take it back and claim they killed it. Said he shot 17 bucks one season doing this and sold every one for between $50 and $100 each. While my Grandfather loved a good story, this was more of a "yeah this happened" than a tall tale so I believe him.

That story has always impacted me, both from how good the hunting was then but also how stewardship/conservation wasn't even a thought, and how amazingly deceitful/prideful those "city" hunters were.

Those people had just gone through the depression. I would bet money they used ever ounce of meat they could get off those deer.
