I recently moved to the Houston area on the north end. Are there any places within an hour or so to set up some targets and pattern my turkey guns? I shoot handloads and do some tinkering with them, plus I have some new to me Guns I’d like to pattern.

Thanks for any info.

Sam Houston National Forest has several free shooting ranges in the woods. Get an Annual Public Hunting permit first.

I length of twine...
A roll of duct tape...
A easel pad (most come in 50 sheet tablets)…
A sharpie marker.....
and the annual public hunting permit.

go off into the SHNF....tie the twine/rope between a couple trees...duct tape a sheet of easel paper to the twine with a sharpie marker dot about the size of a quarter in the middle of it.

You can change ammo and distance to your hearts consent....

Cheap, easy, and private.... up

Edit: If its a little windy try to set up perpendicular to the wind and you can also tape a metal clothes hanger or two to the bottom of the paper.... woot

You may want to check again about just shooting in the SHNF. I think they changed all of that.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I will check out that NF information.
That’s what I was hoping I could do, especially since I only need to shoot 8 or 10 shots total.

Are there any shooting ranges in your area? That is what I did when I went to pattern my Berettas for turkey.

Not sure if they have an area for your purposes, but would think they might?

No target shooting anywhere in the Sam Houston National Forest.
I just call and ask, she said they quit letting people do that back in 2005.

Looks like driftwood is right. Read the rules a little closer and found this.

It is legal to target shoot in the General Forest, with the
exception of the Caddo‐LBJ National Grasslands, as long
as you do not shoot from, down, across a road, have a
sufficient back stop (not a live tree), and pick up your
trash (targets, empty shells, etc.) when you leave. This is
an example of referring to the Code of Federal
Regulations. Target shooting is prohibited in the WMA
on all units of the NFGT:
Angelina NF, Davy Crockett NF, Sabine NF, Sam Houston
NF, Caddo NG.

CFR 261.58(m) states PROHIBITED: DISCHARGING A
FIREARM, AIR RIFLE, OR GAS GUN FROM, INTO, OR
ACROSS ANY PARKING AREA, TRAIL, BOAT RAMP OR
FOREST DEVELOPMENT ROAD.
