 Saripalli Chanavenkateshwaram Rao’s rooster cut his throat with the blades attached to its feet on the way to an illegal cockfighting event.
While cockfighting has been illegal in India for 60 years, the inhumane practice lives on — to the detriment of both people and animals. Gauri Maulekhi, a trustee for India’s People for Animals organization, expressed her frustration:
The offenses have been made very clear and explained to the district and state authorities, but they choose to turn a blind eye towards it. It is not just for entertainment that these animals are made to fight, but it is [also] due to the heavy betting and gambling that goes on in the garb of these events.

Everybody knows you don't put this Spurs on until you get to the event. Amateur! ^^^^ This. Used to work with a couple of guys that had fighting cocks, back when it was legal. One of them wound up with a deep laceration in the thigh from a feisty bird that was ready for combat. They made some insane money at underground fights. Of course, their spread got raided by the feds for illegal gambling eventually.

Ever been to a cockfight?
There used to be several cockfights in the Abilene, San Angelo, Big Spring area each year. Last I heard was that kind of died out in the 90's.

I read a book of fiction called Chicken Scratch that was set up in 603'S part of Texas. It centered around some rooster fighters. Pretty good book.

Got me a friend who is prosecuting a cockfighting ring (or whatever). She's young, blonde and pretty. All the laws refer to cocks and not roosters, game hens or other nomenclature. So, in court, she gets to talk all about cocks. Cocks this, cocks that and on and on about cocks. At this point, she's done a lot of research and is purt near an expert on cocks.

Growing up in SE Okla, and then spending several years working in the oilfield, I have seen my share of seedy places. Fortunately, my wanderings never led me to a cockfighting ring. I knew of them, but never had the urge to visit. Will say, (among other vice locations) saw several casinos set up in garages/warehouses where LOTS of money changed hands, but I was too frugal (and broke) to ever lose much.

I was surprised to see the logo for South Carolina gamecocks still had its spurs. I was for sure that in today's PC culture they would have removed them.

About 8 years ago I had some guys doing work here at our place, and they invited me to a cockfight. I declined. Later years we got the East Texas morons that bought the place across the road from us. They raised fighting cocks, which I found was legal. You can sell them into Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Good Lord what a racket a bunch of roosters can make. Happily for us, it seemed their roosters were too tame, so nobody bought them. Then they moved back to East Texas. What a relief. Awful people.

A friend & I raised them in the early 90’s. Been to plenty cockfights, back in the day. There was some pretty decent money in them.
