Bare with me.
CharlieSierraDelta and his Uber cheap Savage build has reignited an idea I’ve had. I want to build a repeating rifle in 460XVR. I already have the revolver, now I want a rifle. The only one produced is a Big Horn Armory and it starts at $2900.
Idea is to take a Savage and spin on a new barrel, that’s the easy part, the hard part is making the magazine work. PT&G sells the bolt face I need, so that taken care of.
Has anybody here ever messed with a rimmed case in a bolt action?
250-315 grain 45cal bullets moving around 2500fps is going to be a hammer.

7.62x54r, .303 British, 30-40 Krag, 30-30, and many other rimmed cartridges have been chambered in bolt actions and work fine. The calipers that I listed are a rimmed rifle cartridges that I have rifles chambered in now.
Trolling? Heck no, I meant every word of it.

I’ve considered this myself a few times, only I was thinking like a 16” threaded barrel with a suppressor in 45 long colt...
Was thinking it would make a nice hog thumper do it in a short action Remington..

Savage made rimmed rifle cartridge rifles, the savage 340 came in 3030. Also the Rem 788 came in 44 mag, 3030 and maybe a few others. A while back I read some blog etc. on line where I guy built a bolt 45-70 savage but don't recall where lol.
I have thought of doing something similar in the past.

The calipers that I listed are a rimmed rifle cartridges that I have rifles chambered in now. And .22s and .410s and there are some mag fed 12 gauges running around too. I would figure the main thing would be to make sure you load the mags so you don’t rim lock—overlapping cases doesn’t lead to easy feeding.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

I originally developed the cartridge that became the 460 . It was originally a rimless case made for a bolt rifle , so all you have to do is use the original . I still have the reamer I made . Use a 7.5x55 Swiss case with the neck cut off , or just trim the rim and cut a groove on 460 cases . Everything else for the 460 can be used , the dies , load data and a reamer if you grind off the rim cutter . The original cartridge was called the 45 Bandit and it headspaces on the case mouth . It will feed fine out of a .308 mag with a little modification .

On a side note I don't know if he built it or not, but I think Ranchdog on here has a bolt 45-70. May reach out to him.

It’d be best to do it on a Mauser with a slant box magazine.

Siamese Mauser are strong actions that are used for 45-70 with heavy loads. Springfield 1903 are also used for some customs in 45-70, so could probably be used for 460. Found this youtube video of making a 460 S&W on a Savage action,

Found this youtube video of making a 460 S&W on a Savage action, I’m pretty open to other rifles. I like the DIY of the Savage. The action has to be able to handle 65,000 psi. Going to keep the barrel around 16-18 inches and have it suppressed. 300grain bullet moving 2500~ FPS is going to hammer the hogs. 200 grain moving 2800~ will wreak havoc on coyotes.

I have several centerfire boltactions chambered in rimed cartridges 2 788s and one custom 44 Mag that uses the 788 Magazines and a Rugger 77-22H Hornet. All but the Hornet are single stack mags.

I have always wanted a short Marlin lever action in 500S&W. Someone told me it wasn't possible but I don't remember the reason behind it. A 500 S&W short bolt gun would be sweet too.

Didn’t Puma make the model 92 in 454?
Edit: they still make em $5-600. Of course that’s not a bolt.

You should handle a Bighorn, they are really nice. Messed up when we had the chance to buy one at a local gunshow from a stocking dealer. He had a deal that day and we passed, wanted a 454, partly why we passed. Everything about the rifle is first rate. I believe there is a gun shop in Oklahoma that is a stocking dealer, they had a great deal on in stock rifles one year, found it online.

So... the real question is, is the the 460 worth $2800 over the 454 for 200 FPS. Granted it much nicer rifle but pretty is as pretty does.
Same dies, powder, and primers. Just have to buy brass.

I could never spend that kinda money on one but its actually not a bad price for a custom built rifle.

How about a bolt action 45-70 Govt? My Gibbs Summit, based on a SMLE action.
