Another thread was interesting about feeding year round. But I noticed a lot of people feed protein, cotton seed, peas, etc. Does anyone feed corn only year round? No food plots, no protein, no cotton seed. I hunt 40 acres surrounded by deer leases in East Texas and I only have 2 corn feeders out. I understand there are benefits by feeding protein and other stuff but it is expensive and I just do not see enough deer to justify the expense. Just wondering if anyone else only feeds corn with nothing extra or added.

on the three places I hunt, it's mostly just corn. We put in several small food plots on our East TX lease (MLD3), oats and wheat. Nothing else on my west TX place other than corn. Central TX gets numerous food plots (mixed blend of seeds, oats, wheat, chicory, turnip, several clover, peas, etc., under wildlife development management plan), plus mineral blocks and corn spin feeders.

I have thought about putting out cotton seed but just haven't done so yet. Easy enough to make a simple feeder out of concrete re-mesh wire or cattle panels.

I feed a little protein along with corn but on previous leases we just did corn year round or sometimes a corn/soybean mix. Depends on the price of soybeans. Feeding corn year round isn't going to supplement their diet, just keep them interested and hanging around the feeders.

Honestly, that is my situation. Just trying to get some deer to come on the property and hang around.

I also have a timed protein feeder. Same thing, I know I'm not going to grow some monster deer off of it but it provides something better than the neighbors do and won't break the bank since I can control the output.

If there is are good forbs and browse will lay off feeding corn except at select feeders - and then turn the timer throw way down.

Corn only from late September through the end of the season. Our neighbors feed year round, they have little to no natural cover, our pasture is the deer's safe place. One shot and we are covered in deer.

If you have the means a spring and fall food plot would be a help. Most people feed corn I try to give the deer something that the neighbors are not.

I feed year around...I used to just feed from July to end of deer season. I now feed three feeders in a pen and just feed corn and sometimes golden nuggets. I don't know what is best but I have been much better off feeding just corn. When browse freezes I feed more corn. I do believe corn as a carbohydrate gives energy so deer can get extra energy to get what is needed for them. Maybe feeding protein would produce better bucks....The buck I harvested this year was loaded in fat. The bucks around my blind are in great shape. I also feel if you feed corn you have to feed enough to make help support the deer. If you just feed one pound of corn a couple of times a day you are not helping deer that much. I try to feed enough corn to feed about half the deer around my blind. That would calculate out something I can afford per deer per day. This can get expensive but not as much as giving deer all the protein they can eat. You can just bait the deer or you can feed them. I asked a biologist how much protein to feed ...he told me 6 lb.s per deer per day I know I can't afford that..so I comprise such that I can afford to feed. This works for me. What each hunter decides what to feed and how much is correct for them..some may not feed at all. The fun of deer hunting is what you get out of the great outdoors.

Does the Golden Nuggets or Corn Soybean mix do any good on a small property?

The corn/soybean mix always had noticeably more traffic than feeders without it when we used it in San Saba County. The turkeys love it as well.

I have used roasted soybeans...very expensive...$23 per 50 lb.s. I used the soybeans and golden nuggets ...they were eaten...can't say it was better or made my area better. I use the soybeans for more protein some times but can't say what advantage this has over corn....still recommend just corn. The golden nuggets will work in feeders however be careful when it rains as it may clog your feeders as it is not water proof. The nuggets will melt when wet.

If you have or can obtained the equipment to put in a food plot, do it! A spring food plot will hold the deer (does & bucks) plus it is a one time effort and cheaper than anything you can do. Peas are a great spring, summer & early fall food source. I like Iron & Clay Peas since I live in East Texas and summers are on the warm side & dry. The Iron & Clay are drought resistant. High in protein which does with fawns need & bucks growing new racks. Even after a freeze, deer will hit them hard. Plant them as thick as your pocketbook will allow.

I feed year round, but like some of the other guys, it’s just to keep the does around.
