I've been shooting longbow and recurve for longer than I care to admit, and have decided stalking around for rabbit is more my speed than sitting in a blind waiting for deer. I was out at the section where 378 ends and saw no rabbits, tons of cows, and one hog traipsing through the wide open field about 150 yards away.

I'm taking my son next weekend, and he'll be using his 20 gauge. I plan to stick with bow, so I can keep a broadhead in the quiver should the opportunity for hog arise, but mostly I'm stocked with 175 grain Thumpers from Vantage Point Archery.

Questions:
1. Am I correct in thinking this is best done after deer season? I'd hate to be that guy wandering around ruining it for the other hunters.
2. Any recommendations on best sections of Granger WMA to try?
3. I read something about the area off 971 between Willis Creek and Sore Fingers, by a radar site? Does that sound right?

May try at the equestrian area in Willis Creek park. Sometimes they mow the trails so that might be good for rabbits if they are. I have friends that ride there and they often see hogs. Might need to verify if you can have a shotgun in that section.

Shotgun is good to go for rabbits at granger. I've been hunting granger real heavy for the past year and I've only seen 3 rabbits. If you're hoping to show your kid some exciting small game hunting you may want to consider another wma

You'd probably have more fun going on a Javelina hunt in South Texas. The Lad...could shoot one/two with a firearm, you could use your bow(s) and mid-day when not much else is moving..there are TONS of cottontails to shoot at. We always used rubber blunts...but your choice would be fine too.

Most ranches are thick with cottontails...and they make a fun target for roving around with a bow. I've had to put up my Longbows and Recurves this year after 50 yrs. of traditional hunting. Sadly my shoulder (rotator cuff) just won't take it anymore. But archery has always been my first love. I couldn't begin to count the number of rabbits we have taken over the years when hunting mid-day after a morning Javelina hunt.
