Thank you very much. Thank everyone, he was shaking like a leaf with excitement.

We’ve been trying to get him a shot at a couple of deer on the lease all season. Opening weekend he had a big cull buck in the cross hairs and I kept checking the time for shooting light to end. He was on the scope a good 3-4 mins but time ran out without the buck turning broadside. When I told him that was it time was up he was pretty upset but I assured him it was ok and we had plenty of time. So fast forward to the last weekend, he was pretty anxious about not getting a chance at a buck this year. My father-in-law and I had both seen this buck two weeks prior near the oat field by camp and watched him for a good while. We hoped he’d still be in the area this weekend. Friday evening we got in the stand and had deer in the oats most of the evening with 15 mins of shooting light I saw him come in the south end of the field. We needed him to come 100 yards toward the center of the field for him to have a shot. When all the other deer in the field saw him they began trotting towards him and he stayed on the south end till light ran out. Little man was sad but I told him we’d come back Saturday and try to get him.

We got in the stand about 3 o’clock Saturday and started seeing deer about 3:30 about 5:15 I saw antlers coming up out of the creek and I knew it was him. He trotted straight to the middle of the field and started eating broadside. Grayson got on the rifle and got steady, he said, “I’m ready, I’m going to shoot.” Just at that moment he through his head up and trotted toward the creek where I could see other deer in the woods. I told him to just rest a minute he’d be back out when those other deer came in the field. Grayson said my leg was shaking! I saw a doe pop out of the cedars and I told him to go ahead and get back in the scope. I saw the antlers again in the trees and he trotted back out with the does to the center of the field and began eating but this time he was facing us for several minutes. I could hear him breathing and my heart pound I couldn’t really tell which was louder. I told him to take a break and take a couple deep breaths while the deer was facing us, just relax, this is just like when you shot your buck last year. Told him get back on the scope as he turned to our right broadside and began walking. When he comes to a stop come up his leg half way up the body and squeeze. When he stopped he said ok I’m going to shoot, I said squeeze squeeze squeeze....BOOM..whop. The dropped down, spun toward the creek getting ever closer to the earth as plowed up the field, crossed the road and in the cedars and I saw the top of one of the cedars shake, I told him I think he’s down in the cedars.

We gathered our stuff and he started to run across the field, I said hey let’s go get the truck and drive over there! He was jumping up and down with excitement. We drove over to where I’d seen him cross the road toward the cedars. I could see where he’d dug up the road when he crossed but no blood, I figured the bullet hadn’t excited so we began following the tracks. We hadn’t gone 10 yards his head was up in the cedar, I had seen him but didn’t say anything until Grayson saw him. He was excited so I went over a carful approach and then we drug him out for pictures.

The bullet was just under the skin on the opposite shoulder he’d shot exactly where I told him. There aren’t really words for these moments, those of you who know... know. My cup runneth over.
