I took off work Friday to hunt my after deer season lease in Throckmorton county. I wasn’t expecting many bird or planning on shooting any unless a pup pointed it. I unloaded at 8AM and hit my best spots from previous years and found no bird. A buddy of mine showed up at noon and we headed out to check some spots on the far north end of the 16K acres. We were running dogs with no luck in the heat until 3. We had enough and decided to load up and haul arse to west Texas. Drove the mule at full speed back to camp, loaded 9 dogs and a Mule on his trailer then hit the gate. I called an old friend of mine to see if we could spend the night at his ranch in Fisher county before heading south of Odessa. He lives in San Angelo and told me to make myself at home and he would like to meet us to hunt in the morning to hunt the Odessa place. After a short night sleep we met up at the west Tx ranch and had dogs on the ground by 9AM.

We couldn’t have ordered better weather for a bird hunt. We did all of this traveling for a great 8 hours of hunting. It was well worth it. We found 9-10 coveys of blues and killed a nice mess of bird. Two pups I’ve been training had different results. The shorthair pup looked like a veteran. He had several points and found a lot of dead bird. He dug one cripple out of a rathole that ran 100 yards. I was proud of him. The other pointer pup had never had multiple guns shot around her and I’m afraid she’s gun shy. I had high hopes for her but she’s always been soft and probably shouldn’t have been on the ground for a blue quail killing expedition. Unfortunately the gunshy pup is mine. The hero is a buddy’s.

My San Angelo pal hadn’t been bird hunting in years but was knocking them down like a pro. There’s more cover than I’ve ever seen in the Sandhills and the blues held very good for blues once we got a covey busted up. We had a great time and left Odessa at 5:30 this morning to come home. Next time we’ll plan it a little better and get at least two days of hunting in.

Wish I had some better dog pictures, but my lab was the only one loose at lunch break and decided to grab a bird and get in the photo:

Looks like a good time. Those scalies can be downright uncooperative in diffuse cover! Tough break on your EP...

Sounds like fun. I have an EP that is all of a sudden acting gun shy this season and he spent his first 3 years living at a gun range and was one of the boldest dogs i've seen until this season. FYI, going this weekend to pick up a Brittany pup out of the little male you almost got from me when you got Lucy. Gonna look like his Grandad "Bleu"

Nice. How many pups does he have left? It looks like I may have an open kennel.

Give me a call if there’s any pups left. Thanks!

It was a serious bird hunting trip. We didn’t open a beer until we killed a dozen blues. I won’t tell you what time that happened, but we were shooting pretty good.
Hunting blues is not relaxing. Point and sprint! They’ll surprise the sht out of you when they hold. I had several flush behind me while I was on full run in front of a dog. We had some good dog work but hunting scaled Quail the dogs are just there to help out. It’s about killing those running little bastrds. I love em and can’t wait to go back.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

We’re hunting a ranch I grew up hunting on. The country has changed a bit but it’s fun to run dogs on the same places we did 40 years ago. Not near as many bird as there was in the 80’s and 90’s but enough to mess with this year. Last year not so much.

Blues can be a pain but if it gets right they're more fun than Bob's. Some of the best dog fun I've had was on scaled quail after they get scattered.

Had a good morning on the scaled quail. It was drizzling rain and scenting conditions were great, the bird held like a champ. The Brittanys put on one hell of a show. The first two coveys had 8 points and 9 dead bird. The afternoon was tough and the bird didn’t cooperate. 9 covey day. It was worth the drive.

Didn’t get any bird pics. Hunted with my 73 year old dad today. We didn’t take a picture until we were feeding the dogs before sundown. The old man can’t chase after blues in the sand anymore but he made things a lot easier on me and the mutts picking us up between pump jack locations. This was the first time we’ve gotten to quail hunt together this year and we had a great time.

I was worried about my black and white Brittany this morning. After the first round she jumped in an oil containment half full of oil and drank some water out of it before I could call her out of it. She needs a bath and threw up in the box but hunted the rest of the day without any other ill effects. It didn’t hurt her nose any.
