Beats the snot out of a season lease with no birds. Good luck.

Beats the snot out of a season lease with no birds. Good luck. Birds are birds...as far as my Brit is concerned, as long as they will fly without kicking at them.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

A buddy and I decided to give these guys a try and we took the dogs out today for a little reward and fun, after some hard hunting trips that did not produce many birds. These guys have some great fields for quail. Not over grazed, easy to walk, a few scattered ceders, and small gullies. There is some cactus, but small scattered stuff...not bad. Even though there was water in some of the gullies, we found a 5 gal jug and a bowl on the back side of the field...a nice touch, but we are used to carrying water for our dogs. They probably planted some of the birds a little too well...a couple were tucked so deep in clumps of grass they had to be kicked out, but overall they were good flyers. Some of the birds we picked up were monsters! Huge and fat . Glad we went. We'd always like to put the dogs on wild birds, but I could see doing this again. I also think it would be a great place to introduce youth and and new hunters to our sport.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

We were the sunday afternoon group. Had a good time and got to see a couple of young dogs figure it out. Nice place.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Yep, we had a great time on Sunday, i would recommend this place to anyone that wants a quick hunt close to home. The dogs needed to be reminded of why they run so much in the fields, and this place did it.

How did the birds fly? Have to kick them up or flush pretty decent? Working a 20 month old pup and don't want a setback if he were to crowd and catch one.

They birds we had could fly well, but some were too well planted. They were planted in pairs and some had been settled deep in clumps of thatch...those took kicking. Just ask them to not bury them or to just leave the birds with you and plant them yourself.
We all need to practice Whoa more.
