I have a whitetail drawn hunt at Powderhorn next week that includes sambar and axis. I understand the axis are in limited numbers but, hear that sambar are well within the realm of possibility. Other than hearing they are more wary than whitetails, I can find almost no information on hunting them on this continent.

Does anyone have information on hunting sambar on Powderhorn?

Will they respond, positively or negatively, to the corn with Persimmon Crush that I plan on using for the whitetails?

My experience to date has been limited to heavy-brush environs with sub-100 yard shots. I'm not sure I'm up for much beyond 150-175 yards. Am I likely to be able to entice sambar in that close?

Any information on hunting Powderhorn, for any species, is appreciated.

Thanxx,

Tom

Thanks for the link. I had attempted to search the forum but, every time I clicked 'search' it wanted me to login again. When I logged in again, it took me back to the screen I was on when I clicked 'search'. I thought perhaps it was a permissions issue. I really appreciate the assist.

Thanks. That young lady makes the second sub-100yd sambar success I've read about at Powderhorn now. I like the sound of that, especially since the winds are forecast in the 15-20mph range all three days. 40-50% chance of rain with temps on the warm side, from near 60° on the first day and approaching 70° on the last day. It should be interesting. I'm guessing that's going to significantly impact the effectiveness of the Persimmon Crush so, that probably also minimizes the importance of the bait/sambar question. It would still be good to know, just in case.

I got shut out but, my son took a sambar. 329 lbs field dressed. Neither the wind nor distance was an issue. Dropped it in its tracks with a neck shot...at 23yds, stalking, in the open. Weird critters.
