The wife has decided she'd like a cool, bolt rimfire rifle. Seems like we the Ruger Precsion Rimfire in 17 hmr is the one that fits our criteria/needs the best. Looking for any and all comments/critiques/concerns on the rifle. I'll even take opinions on 17hmr vs 22 mag.

thanks in advance

I’ve got one in 22 LR. It’s a lot of fun to shoot, and plenty accurate for most folks uses. I’ve only ran CCI SV through mine, and it’s done fine out to 200 yds. Over the holidays I was shooting acorns off of golf tees at 25 yds. Not a huge feat at that distance, but a whole lot of fun, and that rifle didn’t have a miss in it. It’s obviously very modular, so adjusting it to fit anyone is no problem. The only major complaint I have is in the magazine to chassis interface. It’s sloppy. I’d be okay with it except that it significantly affects reliable feeding. If anything is touching the front of the magazine (hand, range bag, tree limb, etc), it will tilt the magazine enough to change the feeding angle and jam the nose of the round into the rear of the barrel. This is with the supplied 15 rnd BX magazine. A standard 10 rnd magazine should fit close to flush and solve this, but I haven’t tried it. This may not even be an issue with the 17 HMR. I’ve also noticed problems with ejection if you try to ease the bolt back instead of working it normally. These were the issues I ran into, and it seems to be common if you do an internet search. It’s highly possible by now that Ruger has corrected some of these things. I know it sounds like I’m bashing the rifle, but I really do enjoy shooting it a lot. It just has its quirks.

I just picked this up in .17 HMR. Hope to put some rounds thru it this weekend. It looks well built and has a nice trigger pull.

CB, do you have any idea if this is a common problem?

Anyone know if the smaller 9 shot magazine works for the precision rimfire model as well?
The wife would definitely a magazine option that would be flush, ideally, or at least much lower profile.

From the research I did, it looks like it is a common issue. At least with the 22 LR. I haven’t contacted Ruger, or made any attempts to find out if it has been fixed. Mine is an early model. I believe the standard 10 round, 10/22 magazines will fit. As long as you’re aware of the issue, and allow the magazine to ride naturally, it’s not a problem.

I have one in 17HMR i got for my 6year old boy. No complaints especially for the price. I tore it down and re-torqued everything before shooting. Put a 4-12X44 vortex crossfire2 on it with TPS rings. My son can get 1/2" groups at 50yards and 1" at 75. pretty good for a 6year old and we only shoot about 10 shoots a month at the lease. I just sighted it in for him and havent really tested its true accuracy yet. As far as the slop with the magazine, there is an aftermarket plunger for that made by Kidd. I do not have it but have read good reviews of it with the stiffer spring for $7.50. I also did the foil tape bedding, if you google it the youtube video will come up. One other thing is to try different torque for action screws, maxing out at 35 inlbs. I set mine at 30 initially and havent messed with it. I like the 9rd mags, they sit almost flush with mag well - part number 90076. I also like the A17 ammo cause its 100fps faster.
