No it wouldn't.
And Kimbers are over priced for how they shoot.
Well I stand corrected then. I guess Randy Newberg is wrong when he reps a howa chambered in 7mm-08. He’s only killed a dozen or more with that rig And yes I know Kimbers are overrated. Doesent mean they don’t sell a lot of rifles in 7mm-08. I wasn’t suggesting a Kimber at all, I was referring to them chambering a lot of their lightweight guns to that caliber OP said "medium range" that's 400 to 600 yards. 7mm-08 energy is marginal at those distances. I agree 400-600 yards is too far for a 7mm-08. But wouldn’t short range be 100-150 yards ( 30-30 & 45-70 territory ) and medium range 200-350 and anything past that long range? NRA defines "long range" as +600 yards. I've asked hundreds of people that come see me "what is the farthest distance you have hit anything on purpose?" 95% of the time the answer is 300 yards. And I buy it. The old cartridges, with a 3-9X duplex scope can run out to 300 yards without too much fuss. Beyond that, the drop and the wind drift is more precipitous. To me, short range is less than 100 yards.

7 Rem Mag or 7 WSM with a 180 gr.
They will win on foot pounds out of a 22" barrel over the .30 cals mentioned. Higher BC, coming out faster. I have a 7 mm rm McMillian Legacy I have never scoped. It is 24” but thinking about having it cut and recrowned an threaded at 22” Just having a hard time convincing my self to cut of 2” of a 4000.00 rifle. Would you JG? If you want it shorter, cut it shorter. Especially if you're planning on keeping it. Even if you're not, that 22" barrel will tickle someone's fancy. You're losing maybe 50 fps MV with those two inches. So? Thanks I am just needing that little shove! Going to scope it and shoot it first to see if it is all it was built up to be. Seriously, the shorter you cut the barrel, the tighter it will shoot inside 400 yards. A short barrel is a stiff barrel.

I agree with your statement, 300 and under, pick one, past that you really need to start dialing to be accurate and past 400 really taking the wind into consideration and you better have some range time at those distances in varying winds before you go hunt. I am on a 7k acre property and 99% of the shots are under 200 and I have to go seek out places to shoot past 300

WSM, 300 or 7mm would work well. Lots of elk get taken up this way with sub 30 caliber guns, 270 is a popular caliber.

My 7WSM is a dream to shoot and i had it built for my elk gun. Unfortunately, it wasnt ready in time for the one and only elk hunt i went on back in 2015 with the THF fellas. This year it'll hit the mountains though.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested 280AI.
That and 7 Rem Mag would be my top 2 picks.

when I started heading to the mountains in 1979, I purchased my 700 classic 7mm Rem Mag and took my dad's sporterized 30-06 as my backup. My 7 mag has taken 7-8 CO/NM mule deer and one 5x5 elk. It is my go-to rifle for any longer shots or mature bucks, when I drop back to does, I take a 22-250.

I had a Nosler 280 AI, great gun, loved the round but you had better handload or be prepared to spend more on ammo After I got rid of mine I decided if I ever did that type of caliber I would do 7mag, mainly due to so much more ammo being readily available in varying calibers.

Which one? 28 Nosler or 280AI? I've seen lots of factory ammo for both as of late.

Research what you could run 18” on the barrel length or you will hate hunting in the mountains suppressed with a 22” barrel plus the suppressor length.... +1 on this. Especially when you are beating through thick vegetation.

Nosler also offers rifles chambered in 280 AI, which is what I believe ccoker meant.
