I am going to finally build my feeder pen.

Besides size which I’m planning on making very large is there any do’s and don’ts I need to think about?

Also, at the spot I plan on building it at I have 2 spin feeders located 100 yards apart. I plan on in the feeder pen putting 2 feeders a spin and gravity with protein mix. Should I not set up the 2nd spin feeder that would not be in a pen?

most of my set ups have one penned area and another not penned, most are at ~90-180° apart. The penned feeder for deer, the non-penned for hogs. my main setup in east TX only has about a 24" high pen where the deer can easily step over, even fawns ... after the first year, haven't had a hog even try that feeder because of the easy access to the non-penned feeder is only about 120 yards away.

We use to have protein feeders in our feeder pens years ago then noticed a considerable drop off during hunting months of the protein feeders use..Sept to Jan.. So we moved them couple hundred yards away from the plots and feeders in the brush... amazing how the traffic picked up.. Esp the older bucks...Our rut is in Mid Nov to late Nov...Our county biologist told us from the beginning to move them but we didnt listen....We have pics of deer at the protein while hunts were going on...

I delete the majority of my TC pics of bucks eating out of the feeder since you can't see any detail of their anlters. I have deer eating out of protein feeders while I am sitting in the blind if the pics is during hunting hours. I do not recommend hunting over protein feeders, but I do it since I hunt everyday of the season and do not shoot does till late Jan or Feb under MLD. I never shoot a deer inside the feeder pen and I road feed every time I hunt. I have more deer on road corn or oats than I do in the pen from Oct till mid Dec. I shoot all the deer on the road corn. I have fed protein here since October 2012 year round out of these same pens that I hunt over. Starting in late Sept to Oct depending on the year they back off feed when the oats is up and I have been road feeding heavily. Starting in late Dec(rut in mid November till mid Dec.) the bucks move back in due to the feeders and feed heavily on corn and protein at all hours of the day. Right now post rut they are emptying the protein feeders at a high rate and will continue till first part of Feb.

We made our pens out of cattle panels cut in half which is cost effective works great for big hogs, but if you have javalina and little pigs I would definitely recommend hog panels as small hogs and javalina can squeeze in.
