Does anyone know of a place to buy aflatoxin free lableled corn between Dallas and Austin? I would really appreciate it. I have a TPW hunt and need to pick-up some tomorrow.

This don’t buy their deer corn. Go to the feed section and buy the feed corn that is safe for poultry.

Doubt you can find any 100% free of aflatoxin. It should be listed on the bag label the ppm(parts per million). It is usually under a certain amount.

Only buy feed in bags that are in good shape and no sign of water damage. The USDA label will be sewn in the bag stateing Aflatoxin level. See the chart at link. Most dealer will only handle certified legal level toxin free feeds. NO TAG... PASS ON IT.

Corn containing less than 20 parts per billion aflatoxin is considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in all animal feed. Corn exceeding 20 ppb can be fed only for specific age, weight, and production stage. Corn exceeding 300 ppb must be blended with corn containing little or no aflatoxin before feeding is allowed to specific age, weight, and production stage of livestock. Before corn can be blended for out-of-state shipment, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration must be notified and permission obtained from the Missouri Department of Agriculture for this to be allowed.

you might call Brown Feed Store in Lampasas to see what they offer. They bag their own from rail car but there is a tag sewed into the seam of the bags, just never took the time to read it. I actually have a couple left over in the bed of my truck from my run to Ozona last weekend, I will try to remember to take a look at what the tag says this weekend.

Thanks guys, I got a hold of the hunt cordinator and even though the requirement for the hunt says it must be labeled "free of ......" all they really require is that it is clearly lableled for wildlife consumption. Unfortunately with that 80 degree weather it was a pretty poor hunt. Out of 11 hunters only 1 person shot a doe, PFSP. Still pretty country and better than being at work.

FYI ... I finally remembered to look at the tag on the corn from Brown Feed in Lampasas. it states "Deer Corn", "contain less than 50 ppb aflatoxim. To be fed to wildlife" ...

No such thing, just acceptable levels. Anything you buy at feeds store as feed will be acceptable

Some good information to think about when feeding corn and cleaning out old moldy spoiled corn from feeders. To be safe with the old corn I would bury it couple of feet deep to keep birds from getting to it. Makes good hog bait!

Aflatoxins and Quail

snip
The occurence of aflatoxins is influenced by certain environmental factors; hence the extent of contamination will vary with geographic location, agricultural and agronomic practices, and the susceptibility of commodities to fungal invasion during pre-harvest, storage, and/or processing periods. As it is realized that absolute safety is never achieved, the Texas State Feed & Fertilizer Service attempts to limit exposure to aflatoxins by imposing regulatory limits on commodities intended for use as food and feed. These limits vary with the endpoint of the feed. For beef cattle the maximum allowable concentration of aflatoxin is 300 parts per billion (ppb), but for dairy cattle, poultry, and humans, the limit is 20 ppb. Feed intended for poultry (and by extension to quail) should not contain more than 20 ppb of aflatoxin.
