Considering a trip there next week for ducks in the morning and muzzleloader deer in the afternoon.
I have a boat but have never hunted it before.
NOT looking for spots just opinions if it's worth the time and trouble.
Thanks.

Arrived there about 3 pm on Wednesday. Put the boat in and went scouting. The lake appears to be "ducky". Lots of vegetation, different depths from inches to multiple feet deep like most lakes depending on where you are.
It's divided by bridges on hwy 190 running east/west and the main lakes bodies are north/south. The south side was really rough with the wind from the south/sw. The north side not so bad. Lots of standing cypress trees, mud flats, currents from the converging rivers (Angelina and Neches).

I ran literally miles of canals, sloughs, side pockets, swamp, up river past the convergence point, went thru 15 gallons of fuel, about 8 hours of engine time, hours of sitting and just watching for fly bys of any ducks............

My opinion is ---it was a complete burn out, waste of time and money for hunting. The only birds I saw were coots, crows & buzzards. And 1 alligator.

Went out 2 times in the afternoon to muzzleload for deer. I saw 2 deer on the drive out this morning.

It's a stunningly beautiful area. But I'll never go there again. (And I still had a good time).

Thanks for asking.

The place looks like it ought to be loaded with birds, once upon a time, it was. Dad tells me the stories often. At least the fishing is better there.

Thanks for the info amigo. I’ve driven over 190 many times and wondered how the waterfowl would be because it does look like great habitat. I may still give a whirl one day. Why do you think there weren’t any birds?

I can't honestly say why ducks aren't there. In 3 1/2 days I heard some random scattered shooting-maybe 5-7 shots total. I expected to see wood ducks at least as I went up several sloughs shallow water creeks, cut offs, canals between the major bodies of water. But nothing. Not flying, not swimming, not roosting. A big fat zero.
But they are ducks and they'll be where they want to be--just not when I was there.
Admittedly I'm a novice at duck hunting but I've been hunting most of my life and do know a bit about habitat. I have the boat, the time, and the drive to learn more about duck hunting..........now it's just a matter of putting in the miles and the time!

Duck hunting will kick your arse more times then not. That's what makes the successful hunts that much better. It's been an extremely tough season for most hunters this year. Keep putting in the hard work and you will be rewarded.
