I have heard rumors that Nikon has ceased making rifle scopes. Any truth? Thanks Daniel

From what I understand, they are only dropping their rifle scope lines. I wonder how their warranty is going to work if you have a problem. I own only one and it’s been pretty good on my 45/70.

I believe they are history. Many like europtics are running them about 40-50% off right now.

There's a thread about it in the optics section. They are out of the rifle scope business.

It's a shame, too they historically had pretty dang good glass. But, they failed (like so many optics companies) to hire some shooters to educate them on rifle scopes they should build.

I've always considered Nikon to be the Toyota of rifle scopes. You can pay a lot more but the overall value per dollar is hard to beat.

That was absolutely the case when the had the Prostaff, Buckmaster, and Monarch. Then they started changing crap around to where nobody could follow along. They switched the lineup in quality with the Buckmaster and Prostaff, them gave the Prostaff 3 different designations.

I had suggested the original Prostaff to many people with a tight budget as a sure nuff get it done reliably with decent glass scope. Now I don’t even know if they have that offering.

I’m glad the FFII fills that spot now when someone ask what they can do with $200 or less.

Several if not all the scope manufacturers appear to have followed the same course. They've taken the same glass and built something cheaper around it to create a less expensive product, much like Remington did with their rifle barrels.

Agreed. I've only ever bought 2 but for what I paid both were great. Still have the 4x fixed on my 10/22 and it works fine. Killed many turtles and cans with it. There seems to be a spike in long range shooting now. I don't know if Nikon was asleep or thought it not to be profitable or what but they were left in the dust in that market. That FX1000 or whatever it is came too little too late. Had they offered a good option for LR, I would have gone Nikon regardless of what the talking heads here had to say. Nikon, decent glass, fair price, no ability to keep up with changing markets.

No they tried to slide the fx1000 in on a somewhat already educated market. They mushy turrets and cheap plastic was going to cut it at their asking price

Must be a lot of variation on the lower price scopes. The turrets on my brothers FX-1000 feel identicle to my SS5-20 and the turrets on my vortex gen 1 viper are more positive than either of those. There isn't any plastic I know of on my brothers it has been great and the glass is as good or better than the SS5-20 hd.

Given the fact that the parent company Nikon Camera is very anti-gun and anti-hunting, I've never owned a Nikon anything, and have no desire to do so now. Nikon as as a whole is losing money in every sector except their semi-conductor business, or so I've read.

I have no info to the contrary I just don't see why an anti gun company would make scopes?

I have the first gen Buckmaster 3-9x40 on my lever gun and it has been very reliable. I use the Spot On app to show my hold over yardage with the BDC reticle and there are dead hogs and coyotes that have found out just how accurate those numbers can be.

I think, like many companies, Nikon is feeling the pinch of some decent quality offerings out of China that appeal to the most bang for buck crowd.
