We always called it Leaver Rite, when prospecting in Idaho and Arizona. "Leaver Right There" rocks, not worth picking up.

This. Quartz has a Mohs hardness scale value of 7. Gypsum has a Mohs hardness scale value of 2- barely harder than talc. Quartz doesn't flake off, and the crystal structure is hexagonal, gypsum is prismatic.
